Add Google login to existing account

My current account is not linked to Google; I would like it to be. This is basically the same request as this thread from 2016 by @Ptro.

I assume it’s still not possible to merge accounts, but this situation is slightly different, in that I don’t have an existing account using Google (that I know of), so this is more accurately described as changing the login method for an account. Is this possible?

It doesn’t seem to work. I click the Google link under social account linking, but it just takes me here and redirects me to my active games. Then if I try to sign in with Google it asks me to create a new username.
