Go Stone Designs

I’ve found that the stones for OGS are either too harsh feeling or too dull for my eyes for a long time so I’ve been experimenting making stones trying to be between those two ends

Suggestions welcome.

For those interested in the process. My current approach is to create a icosphere and put a board under the stone that doesn’t show in the render but gives a slight glow to the rim. Then I also use two large radius lights for an even lighting rather than a harsh single light reflection like most depictions. In order to get the bright white and the dark black I do change the light levels a little bit so there is a slight inconsistency. Next I’m thinking I might try to recreate the slight translucency feeling of yunzi stones since I also like how they look in real life.

Nice, thx!

Made some more Go Stones. These ones ended up much closer to what I was hoping for in a minimal design that was also not too plain.

Simple, but slightly detailed go stones

Thanks again, @Alendramada – I took your latest ones and converted them to grayscale because for some reason they didn’t look quite right for me … will test these out now.

That’s fair, I tried it grayscale and it looks pretty decent that way too. It might depend on what board and what shadow settings you use too. I was trying some various translucency effects in Blender and aiming to get the somewhat blue and soft new yunzi stone look. I don’t think it quite ended up there. I might end up asking at my local Go club if I can take some reference images since I don’t own yunzi stones myself.
