Hikaru's Mother

I just finished watching the HNG series. As I was processing the loss (!!!), I reflected on the way that Hikaru seemed to completely disregard his mother. And his dad is absent.

Does the asian respect for elders only extend to the men? Does a Japanese mom have so little influence that her middle school children can ignore her instructions and concerns? In the US, I’d have been grounded for life over some of his behaviors.

Well spotted.

Interesting, though, that the author of HnG, Yumi Hotta, is a woman. But then again this wouldn’t necessarily matter much since there are women who act as if they were either voluntary collaborators or hostages of patriarchy.

I’m curious what answers may come here.
