Lightmode theme

Hi all,

I was looking at making some minor css edits to the navbar and noticed the entire lightmode background on OGS is white. IMO is would look pretty great around #edebe9 but I’m not a designer.

That being said, it would be a pretty big lift (lots of things to be checked for how they look on the new background) and would be a fairly noticeable change. So I first wanted to check:

  1. Does anyone other than me want this change. Does anyone not want this change?
  2. Do people have other thoughts/opinions/feelings on how the non-background colors should relate to the new darker background color?

Some screenshots:

Darker background. Note the issues with icons on the right

Play screen with darker background. Note the reduced contrast on the buttons and the weirdness of the dropdowns now being the only white thing on the page.

Us two seem to agree on UI. I personally only use dark mode on OGS but the biggest reason why I only use dark mode is because I find the light mode unbearable. Excuse my strong language but I’m not a dark mode enthusiast in general, I even code in light mode. But OGS is the only app I exclusively use in dark mode because the light mode is unusable for me.

The only reason I’ve never complained about this here is that the dark mode is fine. Now that I’ve seen what light mode could look like I 100% support this change.

I like white.
Slightly gray creates sad mood.

White feels like sunny day.
Slightly gray feels like cloudy day with rain.

I think the proposed change is not so much slightly grey as slightly cream though eh…

I talk about the color of the screenshot in the first post.
Light theme should be less dark than that. And maybe with some of blue color it would be more nice.

One thing that might be handy: is there consensus that moving away from full-white is good?

That would narrow the scope of disagreement to simply trying to agree on one of the infinity of different colour choices, rather than “no change at all” as well

So you are using the current light mode on OGS and you like it?

yes

Out of curiosity:

  • I use dark mode for OGS and I also use dark mode for most other sites
  • I use dark mode for OGS but I use light mode for most other sites

I appreciate the discussion and disagreement here. It’s why I asked.

I am also interested in @Eugene’s question, I think this poll could be helpful.

  • Please don’t change the light background!
  • Please change the light mode background away from white!

One thing to watch out for here is that the OGS forum is also a white background which will make any screenshots much darker than they are.

If you have a light mode background color reference site you do like, I can grab the color from that and get a screenshot of how it would look. The above screenshot is similar to the background color of lichess.org.

I think that’s a good poll but your wording isn’t great. As an engineer I of course know what you mean, but if a non-tech user (and they exist too) sees your poll he might wonder if you are proposing to make the light mode blue or red or yellow (or anything else that is “not white”).

I took a pass through the contrast and darkened the majority of the shades so that the page is fairly indistinguishable from what it looks like now (with the exception of a few pops of white). That being said, as I mentioned in the github message I don’t think we have consensus: while I suspect a majority of users would appreciate this change (or not notice it), there is a minority who likes things as they are.

With more votes a 70/30 split might still be reasonable to change the background color. At 7 votes though I don’t think there’s a sufficient case for merge here without more people chiming in.

If we’re to move away from FFFFFF, we don’t necessarily have to move towards Gray Colors. We can lean on towards Beige. Slightly. Thoughts?

I’m team “anything but #fff for the main background color”, so it’s not me you have to convince. But to to justify annoying users like @square.defender I think you would need to have way more people saying they would like for this to change than the few people who have participated in this thread.

Can i vote for “i like the suggested light gray more than i like the current light theme, but i still prefer the dark theme” ^___^

But the thing ogs is missing right now, is light-accessabile theme. Currently the only accessabile theme is for dark background, so there could be a lot value on making some “light gray and increased contrast” theme as an alternative, instead just replacing the current light theme ^^

BTW here’s ede8e0, beige. Change is a bit more involved since we would need to warm up all the shades and button colors. For future state though, I suspect we’ll want a whiteish cards in the foreground which will look very nice with an off white background.

You can all let me know if there are other variants you might like to see.

Would it be lots more work to make a new theme option e.g “Dawn mode” in addition to current white “Light mode”, rather than replacing it? Then everyone can be happy, unless you think the majority of people would prefer dawn mode but don’t know to change it in settings, but if so you could make dawn the default. Or you don’t want to grow the cockpit.

I was thinking that in the Settings, we could have a “experimental” tab. Where we can experiment things like this on Prod, but also user will know that stuff in this tab are in beta and not polished.
