Name the move contest

Many moves in Go do not have cool names and some are even nameless. Some people even say this is one factor that prevents Go from being popular. So why don’t we have a contest to see who can come up with the coolest names?

Let’s start with our favourite move:

Can you come up with a new name for this move?

“The groan”.

This move has a name: san san.

San-San is just the 3-3 point coordinate, it does not mean the particular position shown of that move under the opponent’s 4-4.

Well then, the san san invasion.

That’s a technical description, not a name …

A technical description is a name.
And btw …
There are so many more moves that you could name the groan.

That’s true but… That’s like naming a baby based on the hospital he was born in, eg. Baby001_HospitalABC.

I always called this particular posititon (4-4 then 3-3) yin-yang, so maybe we just can call it Yang? xddddd

In Dutch this is called “ja, maar…” and in Dutch culture it is considered as impolite.
You agree, and immediately have a I-don’t-agree follow up. Not polite. Uhh, make up your mind.

It’s more than a description. There’s many different corner positions where you could attempt an invasion from the 3x3 point, but if you say “3x3 invasion” you immediately think of this one.

It may not be the most creative name, but in practice it is the widely-known name of this position.

Granted, but:

Ah, so you’re forcing me to agree that it IS the name, albeit not a new name!

OK, I can cop that

Your influence is not worth enough

It’s called the SIYON. (*hit In Your Opponents Nest)

I suppose it’s also a kind of

but with the exception that it’s quite effective in the corner

I like how we have descriptive names like “3-3 invasion” for many things.

And if we were to give more things “cool” names, I think fuseki, shapes, and joseki are better suited than single moves anyway. We already have quite a few good ones

  • Flying Knife
  • Tiger’s Mouth
  • Kobayashi Formation
  • Ponnuki/Flower
  • Monkey Jump (i guess this one is just a “single move”, but it’s a bit hard to name descriptively)

I wouldn’t call it an armpit hit, I feel like those take place on the sides, not corners

It’s the exact same shape, but

I mean I know there’s la tonne of names for the Iron pillar at Sensei's Library depending on its purpose

but again I think in those cases you want to distinguish between naming something because of its purpose, not just because of its shape, either by itself or relative to some other nearby stones.
