Dear OGS developers,
Because of the way I learned go I have more experience with 13x13 (12k) and more matches as well in this site. Now I am more seriously starting 19x19 (17k?) I run into matching issues. I see that the per board rank idea has already been put to rest. Global rank is here to stay.
However, I was wondering if this could be managed by specifying a ‘reasonable’ lower desired rank when playing a specific bard time combination. Like for me for 19x19.
I discovered not surprisingly that when specifying the match conditions I cannot go higher than my global rank. This is preventing abuse (sandbagging).
Could it be possible to instead use the board (+time) specific rank estimation to inform how high can the range reasonably be for that specific type of match? perhaps defaulting to global initially when not data is available? This could allow me to set it between 20k-17k (more reasonable estimation). If I am stronger/weaker the floor will adjust faster than the global rank would have while the global rank adjusts as well.
I believe that if possible this is a quick fix that should be easy to code. But I admit I am not fully sure if this is compatible or will otherwise introduce extra volatility to the ranking procedure. I also anticipate that If I show up with no handicap as a 14k to a 19k match It probably will look suspicious and the other player may cancel.
I am also opening the discussion for any other strategy that could help me avoid having matching issues until my 13x13 real rank and my 19x19 real rank converge IRL and in OGS. I usually play once a week.
