Direction of play
Problem
White to play
What is this?
Black to play and die?
In chess problem description are variations of black to play ~ white wins, black to play ~ black to win and vice versa. In go problems usually are of the type black to play & kill the white group, black to play & live (by seki) or vice versa.
One of the goals of solving a go and chess problem is practice your reading skills. The assumption that a go problem should be of a certain type is just a bit narrow minded and not realistic. In real games you often will encounter situations like this. In your mind you do the reading and determine the status of a group (in this case: black can’t live despite that black could do the first move).
Just adding some realism to the world of go problems ![]()
In all my years of playing Go I’ve never seen a problem with the objective of “play and die”. It fails as a problem in that case.
Also, if the key is white’s defense, then it should be set as a problem with white to play when black throws in. Or you can change it to a multiple choice problem with a question like “can black do something?”

Black to play.
Yesterday I started as an experiment an Absolute Beginners puzzle, for players who are actually taking their first steps in learning the fascinating game of go: puzzles in the range 30 kyu to 20 kyu.
The reason for this is that I decided to put the OGS Learn to play go section’s puzzles into the other puzzles section. The Learn to play go section is not very friendly to its users. Automatic directing a user to the next puzzle when the puzzle has been solved, no way of taking moves back, etc.
Okay, enough for now. Here are the puzzles.
