Good idea. I’ll do the same.
Oh no, now they’re colluding!
Quick, Q and D voters, unite on Q16 to take a stand against the peer pressure!
I’d like to hear what @mark5000 thinks.
It’s an interesting position…
Q16 seems a little ugly at this point; I also don’t want to approach from a low position. I don’t think we’re going to get much use out of tengen. I prefer R5 to Q5 on principle, since Black’s R5 cash is pretty good.
Let’s try R5.
Alright, you’ve convinced me. I’m voting R5.
If you draw a diagonal from the lower left to the upper right, and put an approach move to the upper right, you can see that white has the better of it (not mentioning the komi in white favor!)
So i’ll ask to all the players approaching there to join the most promising Kakari (between Q16, P16 and P17). You can try to make win your own suggestion but please go for a compromise before the closing!
Approaching NE is a must!
What??
vote for Tengen is only 6%, while its 7% for other points?
This is some discourse mysteries, which will not confuse us of course
That’s because it’s Tengen.
This can happen in any poll with Discourse. They do funny rounding just to ensure that everything sums up to 100%. It’s just a subjective design choice.
I’ve switched my vote from P17 to P16, following suit with the voting by mark5000
Well, only one move stands out to me: p16. I give my thoughts below.
Enclose. This seems a bit overconcentrated on the left side (Cho Chikun warns not to put all your eggs in one basket). It also lets Black choose which corner to enclose, and Black would choose the upper right corner because it projects influence toward Black’s own stone, according to the traditional Go theory. Let’s deny Black this ideal formation.
Approach lower right. If Black would enclose the upper right corner, then that signals that it’s a key placement. If we play r5, I’d expect Black to pincer. And if Black pincers, then it’s suddenly hard to find a variation that’s both peaceful and sente. If we take gote, then Black gets the ideal enclosure and all the stones would work well with one another. And if we tenuki from r5, I don’t see the point of hitting r5 first.
Approach upper right. q16 looks strange. AlphaGo played it before, but only in Chinese openings where it formed a living group in cramped circumstances. It can also function as a leaning attack. But here it does neither. The choice between p17 and p16 may seem cosmetic, but White seems well-positioned to use influence on this board.
Tengen. Best move. Possibly the divine move. But not on this board.
It’s a bit difficult for me to see all the different possibilities of approach and pincers but even if white settles on the left and black enclosed, how ideal will be black formation, wouldn’t be the pincer stone a bit far away from the enclosure? Isn’t E4 helping white to approach and relieving a bit the pressure of a pincer too?
Same time, I am asking myself how white can play his left side, is his own enclosure, like a 2 spaces high jump a good move to think in a near future, or what would be the right way to complete there? I mean a wall without an extension is not really what I like to handle.
I think we all can relate.
I don’t think Black would enclose. If White plays r5, I think Black would pincer (say, two-space low), a fight would ensue and we won’t see an enclosure by Black or White for a while.
The best enclosure is unclear right now. We’ll cross that bridge when it comes.
this is rigged D:
Tengen is great, what are you talking about?
D:
Tengen is wonderful. And why not on this board anyways? What is so good about other boards?
Conclusion:
I am the only one that wants to play tengen anymore this game.
@tonybe , I think Q5 is better too, but it has no chance to win.
R5 has similar goals. It would be boring without white stone on the right side. So if you are for the right side, please make the right choice and change your vote for R5
OK, preventing a large extension is more important than being right
Fine, I’ll give my vote to your not quite so adventurous approach.
Suggestion Time!
Now, I think Black would like to get some influence towards the right side out of this exchange, so I would suggest something like P15 or Q14
