C16. White needs a corner, and this one is better than the upper right. Probable variation is C16, D15, F16 (or F17).
If we pincer, I suggest d12. Two spaces to maximally use our distant wall, and high to emphasize influence and benefit from our advantageous fighting position.
Other moves worth considering include e16 (shusaku’s diagonal; an AI favorite), r15 (attaching; supporting a future approach on the lower right) and r5 (immediate approach; preventing all black enclosures; chaotic).
Park Jungwan played the kosumi in a similar position.
If we can get E16 C12 R17, that seems good.
But I’d still prefer going for the kick.

As usual, discussions and suggestions are still open until the closing of the poll.
I don’t think kicking at c16 is correct here. It’s played to take the corner in sente. But since it pushes black toward our thin d4 group, we’d owe a move after c16, d15 f17 (or f16), d11. And if we need to settle at c9, we lose this benefit.
I guessed you meant C16?
I’ve come round to Mark’s opinion, I now think we should do E16 and avoid those exchanges which could make trouble for the C4 stones later. I think our plan is still to aim at R17, though.
Friendly reminder to change your vote then. And does anyone else want to help E16 or F16 break the tie? @Groin? @shinuito?
I don’t know how to change vote in a poll.
Click “Show Vote” and then click a different option than before.
White 12: E16 wins with 5/14 of the votes.
Let’s give your suggestions for Black 13.
The game is: HERE
In my own games I’d probably play C12. Here I’ll suggest a more optimistic C11.
I believe C12 to be the best local move. I think the debate is whether we settle now or tenuki to P17. WIth the C4 wall in place, I think settling immediately will be better.
Enclosing the lower right is also an idea, but perhaps not the most relevant.
Hard for me to find something else as C12. Anything bigger or higher is like offering a target
Same time it looks constraint, I dunno, still looks like we can’t tenuki too. C11 may be the idea making C16 less attractive for W?
Ok I suggest C11
I’d go for p17 or maybe even n17 or some kind of pincer to try out
What about G17? Denies eye space / prevents extension at the top?
White has played a slow move here: F16 is the standard move nowadays. After F16, the main options are C12 and tenuki, with C11 being slightly deprecated. Since White’s E16 is stronger against our C15 stone, that suggests to me C12, especially since White has some strength towards the bottom and a more solid group will help in blunting its effect.
Therefore I support the C12 initiative.
Here for the F16 explanations:
Here I’m not so sure what move I should pick. However here are the candidate moves I would consider:
C12 quickly settles the C15-stone. This is probably the best move to continue in the upper-left.
C8 is not an extention from C15 but rather a pincer attacking the white wall. As far as I know this is the distance considered best by AI. However white might press down with D14 or invade the left side later. I feel like this move asks for a fight.
P17 takes the corner territory and is a good way to continue in the top-right.
All things considered I would slightly lean towards C12 here.
Remember: White has been playing for initiative thus far. Because of that, I’d support a fourth-line extension to D12. It’s tight, so we could ignore any approach at C10. And C10 would be too far for White to extend anyway, so we might get to complete our left-side formation 3rd-line / 4th-line / 3rd-line.
I’m also drawn to R14. It’s not a joseki move, but I think it really suits the position. We’ve been going for territory, we have potential on the right side and it’s hard for White to bridge the gap between P16 and E16 efficiently. As a result, we’ll get to disrupt the upper side later.
