I love OGS but players here are quiet rude in general. I totally get that it is a war game, ego thing involved with hard feelings etc etc etc, but a simple hi before and thanks after the game makes the whole world of difference.
Is it just me, or do you also think that following super basic etiquette will make the game much more enjoyable?
No real proposition here. I guess it is a question of how people are brought up and it is a complex topic.
I personally always try to greet and thank. Even if the game is a very bitter loss, I still try to do that, even though it can be really hard sometimes.
We all know it can get pretty hard emotionally, and a simple “gg thx” from your opponent can make a night-and-day difference. Especially when reviewing. Each blunder feels somehow less personal if you felt some humility on the other end.
Apologies if this topic was brought up before; I am new to the forum. I guess I just wanted to see if someone else shares the same feelings.
Welcome to the forum, and sorry for my slightly “short” response
As with many topics of preference, we are all likely to be staggered by the range of opinions about this, and any other topic, in a worldwide community without face-to-face contact.
It absolutely offends some people that their opponent doesn’t greet them - some users are so outraged that they will take to extraordinary measures to “punish” the “rude” person on the other end ( )
Others are strangely satisfied with seeing “gg” at the beginning even though this originates from an automated script.
Others are offended by “gg” at the beginning, because they think it is an insult saying “Good Game, I’ve Already Won”.
The theme here for solving this kind of problem is: don’t be easily offended
Yeah there’s definitely wisdom in your words, and I guess you are right, even though I still think that greeting and thanking for the game is a most basic etiquette. Not only in Go, but in general.
But I hear you. If you can’t change something, change your attitude.
It would be wonderful to see that happen, but the world today is a far ruder place than it was in my youth, 55 years ago. I do not expect to see a reversal. Indeed, several aspects of modernity encourage the increase in rudeness.
There could be a small pop-up with 5-6 premade choices of “how would you like to greet your opponent?” kind of thing before any move is played and a similar “say good-bye” pop-up after resignation or the pass-pass phase.
It could be mildly annoying though, so it could be made to be togglable from the options?
People are ruder online than in person. When I play go IRL, we always tell each other “have a nice game” at the beginning and “thank you for the game” at the end.
After greeting your opponent at the beginning of the game, you should play the first move within a minute. The system is set up so that you can’t play your first move if you haven’t sent a greeting. Also, if more than a minute elapses without your sending a greeting or if you are cut off, the game will be counted as a loss for you. In this case, the winner will have 50 points added to their score and the loser will have 50 points deducted.
While I too preffer at least a common courtesy, I would not interpret lack of a greeting as “being rude”. A bit of indifference maybe, in the anonnymous online environment, but rude? Also remember that quite a lot of people play quick games on mobile in their spare time, where it can simply a bit coumbersome to scroll, navigate, and type a greeting in often quick time settings.
As a bit of a optimistic counter argument, I always played mostly correspondence games, and rarely ever encountered a “silent treatment”.
In my opinion most OGS players might be a bit lazy, but I would not say rude
I honestly hate that. I would rather play an honest rude person, rather than forcing people into fake hypocritical politenss. What’s the point, if it’s not genuine?
However, I have encountered players who apparently either prefer to stay silent, for whatever reason – they might, for example, be disabled and can’t use the keyboard –, or, in rare cases, they were silenced by OGS (this does occasionally happen for, yes, being extremely rude).
But not talking in game chat is not “rude”, IMHO, even though I personally prefer to greet my opponents at the beginning, and to thank them after the game. But that’s just MY preference, and I can accept if the other side doesn’t feel the same way.
I play on a phone, and until the recent update had to face this annoying behaviour that once I type something into chat, the screen automatically scrolls down to chat after every turn I play.
Because of this, I don’t tend to type anything until after the game has ended.
After typing and sending message, you need to click into the chat messages pane, not the text box, to remove focus from the text box to fix the scroll problem.
