Different perspectives. I consider Jack London an exemplar of hope, and I usually prefer hope. Of course, it is true that there was a great deal more freedom (at least in the U.S.) in those days, so people then had more opportunity to change their lives.
I don’t take North Korea as a benchmark for advice about hope.
It is perhaps characteristic of me that my favorite novel is The Count of Monte Cristo, where the theme of hope is driven home in the final sentence: "…has not the count just told us that all human wisdom is summed up in two words?—‘Wait and hope.’ "
I guess I can list one person who has watched them.
I’ve not read it but it sounds like they came to a sticky end…
For some weeks I see reports of Belarussian ‘railway partizans’ frustrating supply of weapons, fuel and food to the Russian troops in North Ukraine (this supply is largely routed through the railway network of Belarus).
Belarussian hackers and railway employees block railways, blow up switch hubs, disable signalling and hack railway IT systems.
The Belarussian president Lukashenko may be supporting Putin’s war, because he needs Putin’s support to stay in power, but regular Belarussian people don’t seem as supportive as their leader is.
Anyone knows what to do with NSP files from Switch? Like, if I don’t have Switch? It all seems complicated.
Heh, good quote. Robert Asprin
When things are at their blackest, I say to myself, ‘Cheer up, things could be worse.’ And sure enough, they get worse.
Maybe you were thinking of Middle and South American Tapirs? I think those are a little smaller.
Interesting also how German Wikipedia lists five currently living species
… while English Wikipedia lists only four:
I don’t know. I think it’s more because it looks like a pig. One rarely sees wild animals next to humans for scale.
In English wiki it says The Kabomani tapir was at one point recognized as another living member of the genus, but is now considered to be nested within T. terrestris. So that’s why. Determining species is hard.
I liked this video of Hostomel airport. Because it’s filmed by a person who worked there. Also, world and peace is the same in Russian, so it’s like here’s how Russian peace looks like.
It’s this one:
(or is Wikipedia also blocked for you?)
Hey! I already posted that here (and you didn’t even like it!). Well the original. Not really surprised that it’s come back into people’s awareness.
The RGF posted this photo of Maria Butina playing Go in Moscow in February, about 9 days before Russia went to war and invaded Ukraine.
Previously, the RGF typically shared photos of interesting Go antiquities, interesting board positions, tsumego… normal stuff. This one seems very different and I think it deserves a bit more attention than it got when it was posted, especially in the light of recent events.
Maria Butina was jailed in the US for being an unregistered foreign agent (a spy) and became a member of the Duma on her return to Russia. She has recently been giving interviews to the BBC, falsely claiming that the Russian army never targets civilians and dismissing as false reports of Russian war crimes in Ukraine
It’s the sort of thing that gets deleted in future. I hope you won’t mind me posting it here. I think it is important to remember these things.
How do you know Russian army does? There’s no reason to target civilians. What, you don’t have an enemy to shoot at? On the other hand there’s a great reason to lie that Russian army does - to stir up emotions in Ukrainian defenders to fight even more fiercely, in world community to help more. Remember, a house isn’t a civilian target when there’s enemy inside. And that’s where the enemy will be when you’re fighting in cities.
It’s not. It’s “look, a famous/powerful person plays go”. It’s not really endorsement. Like, when I see something like https://www.usgo.org/news/2012/08/ron-paul-using-go-strategy-to-advance-agenda-at-gop-convention/ I don’t assume AGA is libertarian.
“LIFE AFTER 24.02.2022”
There is a very good reason to target civilians: it’s to break the morale of the enemy. It puts a lot more pressure on Zelensky if civilians are being targeted, since he then has to choose between defending the country politically but having its citizens being killed, or saving the population of the country but having to do political concessions.
Another reason could be that it’s also a common theme for losing parties in a war, or for parties that have not enough power to overpower their opponent. Think of the US in Vietnam, or the way rebel terrorist groups fight wars. Again, the goal is to convince the opponent that continuing the war will cost a lot of innocent lives.
Talking about the US and Vietnam, and how horribly bad the intentions of the government of a country at war can be, it’s worth reading through some articles about the pentagon papers. The main reason for continuing the Vietnam war, which largely involved the slaughtering civilians, was to prevent the US from being humiliated.
I don’t know if Putin gave specific orders to target civilians, but with the Russian army shelling residential areas of besieged cities, I guess Putin doesn’t care much about lives of civilians.
