I don’t think this will add much to the conversation, but I’ve always thought that ranks/grades etc were indicators of progress, rather than targets to be aimed at. The analogy that comes to mind is the martial arts thing of executing a punch that stops just short of a candle flame, putting it out. The aim is not to extinguish the candle, the candle is there to let you know when your punch is no longer imperfect.
