So it seems to me that we are saying the same thing. The two initial moves - small knight approach and pincer - don’t bring much value.
Let’s also keep in mind that AlphaGo plays those sequences very early in the game. If there was already a stone on a side (e.g. san ren sei), the evaluation would be different and, I would expect, closer to dwyrin’s assessment.
