I read that and thought it was real. My initial reaction was “Way to go anoek. Always acknowledge there is room for improvement!” :smiling_imp:

KGS has pros doing lectures. Where are the OGS pro lectures? OGS needs all of the features that make those lectures possible

Mostly on twitch or YouTube. There are pros who use ogs.

I think there is a feasible path to combine without actually combining servers. KGS now has a workable chrome extension called GO Universe, which I am now using for basic KGS stuff (apparently no KGS+ lecture support on it though). Go Universe aspires to support more than one server as a client. I believe the Go Universe code supporting KGS could be ported into the OGS client. OGS could just provide the interface, but access an additional login. It could even move over records of KGS games.

AGF might be more willing to listen to consolidation ideas with OGS, if OGS can be demonstrated not only against its own server, but KGS’s as well.

Technically, Tygem shares the servers with Toyo-Igo, a Japanese platform, IGS with Panda, Wbaduk with Yugen-no-ma, also Japanese platforms. So your second proposal should be technically feasible. Although, you need to figure out combining the ranking system and issue with ranked 9x9 and 13x13, not available in KGS.

This simply means OGS couldn’t be merged into KGS… but would not be a barrier to KGS being merged into OGS

I would never want KGS mods to have any influence on OGS.

I don’t think anyone has proposed that at any point?

No, but I would expect a merger to turn into a “who retains control” kind of thing, and I have not heard a single good thing about KGS mods.

Fair. Perhaps “merger” is the wrong term. In practice, I believe it would be more along the lines of “KGS can no longer support itself, and so OGS absorbs it into the collective, as we did with nova.gs”

OGS would change in some ways, but we would retain full autonomous control. OGS would still be owned and operated by anoek and matburt and the moderator team selected on their sole discretion (with input from existing mods highly valued). It is possible KGS mods could be accepted into the team, if it is deemed they have both the will and fit with existing mods, but the merger itself would be unconditional AFAICT

Total and unconditional surrender of KGS!

This thread has drifted in a direction that assumes KGS would have the slightest interest in participating in such a merger.

Firstly, this thread can only assume that KGS would want such a merger, there is no other way to discuss. Secondly, it would obviously be a last resort just short of total death.

KGS is better because it’s leaner. You can come, play, fellowship, done. OGS is a sad example of an overload of options. I hope one day WMS comes back and brings us a client for any system - that’s all. There are no new features that need!!! to get implemented.
