Because when on top the height (space taken from body of page) is fixed at 1 line, but when on left the width taken from body of page is the max length of all items which might be more than you’d like (consider translations too).

What about doing it book spine style: turned 90°?

if you have vertical offset to the right then you need an extra dog-leg mouse movement to select, and if they are horizontal items off to the right you need large mouse movements across and it’s easy to have an inadvertent vertical movement and lose the menu.

Then book-spine those. I think these are problems which have been solved before computers were even conceived

Do you really think you are better at designing user interfaces than the guys at amazon, who spend millions on UX research to make it easy to navigate and spend money on their website?

Amazon is disincentivized to make an interface which is too different from other websites or their own past, so it’s not a good metric of what interface is best

How do you think menu design to minimise mouse movements was solved before the invention of computer mice?

not that part, wanting words to fit in a narrow vertical space, which is followed consistently would be the same mouse movements as for top menu bars

After watching this aspect of the web deteriorate horribly over the last decade or two, I am very doubtful about “There are ways”. Sorry. OGS UX is not perfect but it could be a lot worse. So I’d rather keep it as it is.
