it’s only “complicated” because one person is too afraid of being seen as rude to be honest with them. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, and it ain’t broke
Then if so, I agree we could move to something similar to the fan list of kgs. No need to ask anything if this brings nothing more.
Still offer a list of players you can chose to follow and with their online status.
personally I like having a friends list for people I keep in contact with on ogs… that being said, it would be great to have a separate follow list, with an indicator whether the person is in game… that way I could follow the pro accounts or people I like watching play… i.e. friend list for asking people i know to play, or the follow list to watch people I dont know… but yeah, no real opinions on the matter other than it’d be sad to lose the friend list…
That’s a proposal I could get behind, though I don’t mind the status quo
Just rename “friend list” to “follow list” and you can keep all your friends there exactly as you do now. You would just no longer need permission from them to add then to your list. You don’t lose anything, there’s nothing to be sad about, and all this complexity of whether to respond or ignore or whatever can completely go away.
A follow list would be great, to;
- keep track of players who I might want to watch games of…
- see whether they are currently in a game in the list…
- easily access their profiles, for example, a strong player might advertise lessons there, or a bot might have their settings specifically there…
a friends (or contact list or whichever is preferrable to call it) is great to;
- keep track of and contact with people you know on the site,
- easily see whether someone is online (as opposed to a follow list, where I would only be interested to see whether they are currently in a game)
- be able to message them easily…
- if one would like to ever implement only whispers or DM to people on a friends list allowed, to be able to filtrate who is able to message you…
in any case, like I said, I have no strong opinions on the matter, other than, it’d be sad to lose the friends list… in particular for the reason that IF the site ever decides it is better to limit who is able to contact eachother through private messages, or even hide their online status to strangers, which are implementations I would support, as it would make the site safer to use, and would maybe even be necessary if the userbase were to grow to a size where personal moderation from case to case would be too large an undertaking, edit; in which case it would be preferrable to be able to contact people on a white listed contact list rather than blanket lose all ability to contact anyone…
final point would be, when a suggestion is made to tweak a small part of a functioning system, revamping the whole system seems like something that might need more input, if one were to consider what user experience the userbase would find most comfortable…
The way the site is set up, you can message anyone whose name is visible. I’m failing to see how the distinction of follow and friend is helpful here. (Unless you’re suggesting we make it harder to message non-friends
)
if my post was too long to read, then why are you responding to it?
edit; to adress the specifics in your quote… the key word is easily, where a follow list would be cluttered by people you not know, a friends list would make it easier to access the people you do know…
In this case I think may be it is better to implement the ability to create multiple lists with the ability to request consent. The only issue is designing the UI.
to be clear, I would fully support the idea of adding a follow list, though if the removal of and replacement of the friend list is being suggested, I would see it as a much larger topic than the feature suggestion of tweaking how edit; notifications within the friends list works, and it might be beneficial to consult the userbase in a wider sense somehow to gauge the general sentiment…
Why would it get cluttered just because it becomes a follow list? You can still use it to “follow” only your true friends if you like.
I just realized how absurd the current situation is. We actually already have one-way follow lists.
When someone sends me a friend request, it automatically adds them to my list. Here are some people I am following because they have added themselves to my list:
I can also add myself to their list by clicking the green button.
That’s backwards from the normal model where the follower is the one who chooses to follow people.
It is wrong way ![]()
But it is very interesting. We need another checkbox below show offline. Something like hide those I don’t follow.
I mean, as long as that’s an option, I guess.
Is there any reason to keep “deleted” on that list? ![]()
So… who’s making the poll?
The one asking? ![]()
![]()
Lol fine. Before I make it, here’s the options I’m thinking:
Just Follow list
Just Friends list (status quo)
Friends list and Follow list
No lists please, I only have enemies
Any other necessary options?
“I just want to vote for something”. Gotta have a lightning rod for people who don’t really care
my dream option would be;
- Contacts & Follows
and also move unanswered friend requests
from the top of the friends list to somewhere where also Blocked Accounts would be listed, so these are out of the way, but still available to be found somewhere…
but I’ll settle for one vote on option three tbh…
