How do you define philanthropist? I don’t think one has to be rich to be a philanthropist.
- Is he typically on the news?
I’d say someone who is known for donating money.
You could be middle-class and donate money.
But you wouldn’t be known for it.
- He’s not typically on the news
In addition, you probably won’t get on Guess the person! (Because it would be hard for us to guess an obscure person)
I’m thinking about this
Very indirectly, but you’ll get it if you know who it is.
I think he might be the creator of a programming language (This is NOT A QUESTION). It must be an old language, most likely not around. Being alive, this rules out Alan Turing and Machine Code.
Edit:
Assembly Language is also gone!
Even more indirectly
I wonder if he’s a cafeteria person who works at a coding company.
Edit: They probably wouldn’t be famous
I think that’s fine to be unambiguous, just for the sake of a game, but I will still pedantically contend that philanthropy should not be so narrowly constrained to only those that can personally give a lot of money.
For example, I think Captain Sir Thomas Moore could be considered a very successful and well-known philanthropist, even though he is not known to be wealthy.
First, I thought you meant someone who makes transportation vehicles
Agreed.
So, any more questions?

Are there any famous investors who are not known to be rich?
With only 4 questions left and the game grinding to a halt, I’ll give a hint: his profession is academical.
- From the Western hemisphere?
- Yes
Not a question, just thinking out loud. With few questions left, I think we should focus on probing the group of well-known emeritus professors.
Noam Chomsky?
