Guess the person/ 20 questions

Let’s narrow the Anglophone country part:
Q10. Is he from the USA (by birth and citizenship)?

Then narrow the profession part (because “famous for movies/TV” could include directing, writing, music, etc.):
Q11. Is he mainly an actor?

Q12. Has he been involved in a major scandal that severely tarnished his reputation?

If the answer to Q11 is yes:
Q13. Is he mainly associated with a single character from a long-running series? (For example, if you showed me a photo of Rowan Atkinson, I would recognise him as Mr. Bean, but I had to Google for his real name.)

  1. Not from the USA
  2. Not mainly an actor
  3. Subjective, but I don’t think he’s been involved in any major scandals
  4. This is quite subjective as well, but I would personally consider this to be a Yes

I’d like it if we don’t ask four question simultaneously. It’s valuable to first learn the answer and then base a new question on the result.

Also, spreading out the things to narrow into is a bad strategy, it’s better to have a clear view on one particular aspect than have a broad view about many aspects.

Sorry, I didn’t notice that you edited your post to make question 13 conditional on question 11. It’s a better idea to just ask your questions one at a time, as @Vsotvep noted. It also gives others more of a chance to play.

Thanks for the advice. Maybe next round I could decide on the person (I have at least two in mind) and you guys ask me questions (which will also help me learn how to ask better questions)?

I think whoever guesses right is the one who chooses the next person.

To summarise what we know so far:

  1. Real living male
  2. Ethnically white from an Anglophone country but not the USA (so Canada, UK or Australia/NZ)
  3. Aged 35 to 55, was famous 15 years ago
  4. Profession in movies/TV but not mainly an actor
  5. Has not won an Oscar or been involved in a major scandal

Western pop culture is not my field but for those more familiar, 3 could be a big clue. I am tempted to ask whether he is more famous for movies or for TV but am unsure how to phrase it as a yes/no question without ruling out other possibilities (he could be equally famous for both or he may be even more famous for something else, such as music).

If the answer is TV, he could be the host for a long-running series (think Who Wants to be a Millionaire or Oprah Winfrey) while if the answer is movies, he is likely to be a screenwriter, producer or director (or he could be one of these for a TV series but such people for TV series are less likely to be that famous).

Another option is to narrow down his nationality from among the remaining four Anglophone countries.

Let me play reverse twenty questions…

Were you thinking of John Oliver?

Not at all, I was just thinking that if someone is famous from the movie / TV industry, but not mainly from acting, and has British nationality, then they’re quite likely to be comedians.

Well, we’re doomed.

A hint: even though he is quite famous for his work on television (and is probably why most people know about him), I think most people would say that his primary occupation is something not related to TV.
