How intuitive is OGS for new users?

I have avoided mentioning this, as I’m not sure how difficult it would be, but would it be possible to have custom navbar shortcuts? This would also make it clear that nothing here can be accessed only through here, and they are simply convenient shortcuts to common pages.

default links: [[Play a Game](https://online-go.com/play)]

settings: Please list shortcuts to OGS pages you wish to have on the navbar. Place each desired shortcut on a new line with the format [My Link Name](URL to the page). Lines beginning with # will be ignored. Maximum of 7 links, any more will be ignored. Links must be to a page on www.online-go.com/*, or www.forums.online-go.com/*.

Wouldn’t you just bookmark those links yourself? (I do!)

True. Right now most of the places I want to go are in the navbar, so I don’t bother, but I probably would if they left the navbar.

Hah, no…one Information Architecture class over a decade ago. Take everything I say with a pinch of salt.

@esoka on the other hand…I like the ambition, the willingness to completely rethink things.

I am drunk and no tournament is pending, so i will add my 2 cents here

How intuitive is OGS for new users?

I would say, quite intuitive (I don’t know how it was back in 2020, though)

Is it perfect? no.
Is it good? i would say so.
Does it need a complete overhaul? i don’t think so.

My point is: we shouldn’t confuse the people maintaining this site with too many ‘great ideas’.
Suggestions for incremental approvements could be much more feasable and productive.

For example:
I think the Profile nav-bar item should be moved to the left (probably next to Home)
Reason:
It gives instant access to one of the most useful pages and gets cut off on smaller screen sizes.

Just as an FYI, profile page can be reached without the nav bar link with 3 simple clicks in the top right corner.

Sticking with the theme of the thread, this is not at all “intuitive” though I agree it is nice to know.

Yes I agree it’s not intuitive, just thought it would be helpful. :slightly_smiling_face: also a good example of useful and desired features being present just not necessarily easy to find :slightly_smiling_face:

Clicking on your avatar on just about every website opens your own profile, not sure what’s so unintuitive about that.

I guess it’s the 3 clicks. ;D

Yeah clicking on your name not once, but twice, certainly feels a bit unintuitive. (Not that I have any suggestions on improving it!)

Well… we could just have the name go straight to the profile (not for all of them, just the top right menu) reduces clicks by 33%, how’s that for a metric!

In case there’s a concern that’s not consistent, clicking your name on the top right of the home page already works this way, so it’s at least consistent with that one.

So in that case, we could put away the pop up and put its content directly in the profile page (message, challenge, block…)

No he’s not proposing removing the popup entirely, just for that specific location.

So in that case you lose the orders available in the pop up? I don’t see the point. (And keep my post as another suggestion)

You had none of those options here anyway, it is your own name, so all you see on the popup is your profile picture, your name (which is a link to your profile) your rating and your rank.

The proposition is that in this instance, having the first name link directly to your profile makes more sense than displaying your picture, rating, and rank.

I’m not sure I follow @Groin. We are just talking about the link for your own profile (in the upper menu). Most of the buttons you mentioned don’t even apply to yourself (block, challenge, chat)

Yes, my bad. I’m so used to click names that i forgot we are talking on clicking your own name.

And yes obviously clicking your own name anywhere should open your profile without useless popup

This is a pretty reasonable observation. I think there might be some level of desire to be able to click your own name to see your rating and rank… but honestly, I don’t know if that would outweigh the simplicity and consistency of clicking on your name anywhere always taking you to your profile page…

Both options discussed should be pretty easy to implement… maybe we just go with Groin’s proposal first… and if enough people complain, we can roll it back to benjito’s original suggestion…

So besides this i keep the idea that then you click on another player name and get that popup, it’s very unintuitive that you go to his profile by clicking again his name in the popup.

And a way would be to integrate the orders of the popup directly in the profile page and get rid of it.

This has the drawback of needing to navigate wholly to an individual’s profile page in order to take any of those actions. The advantage of the popup for users who aren’t you is that you can do all of those actions while remaining on the page you are on, this is especially important in the case of that page being a live game you are currently playing.
