Is this considered cheating?

Hi - I wrote this 19x19 FOR BEGINNERS article a while ago where I suggested that - if you’re between 20-12 kyu, then there are really only 10 joseki patterns you need to learn, because they’re so effective and all-purpose that they work in 99% of the situations you’re likely to encounter until you get closer to SDK players.

PART 4: JOSEKI BASICS

The metaphor I used was - think of joseki as a vast Swiss Army knife with specialized blades for every occasion. Even though it comes equipped with a fish scaler, wood saw, hoof cleaner, and cuticle pusher - on a daily basis - you’ll probably keep using the same handful of basic blades over and over (i.e. knife, screwdriver, scissors, etc).

The 10 joseki I discuss are the go-to variations you will see over and over on OGS, so if you just understand how they work, you don’t have to “remember” them or look them up every time, they’ll just make sense from a gote/sente standpoint. Good luck!
