Not Just Another Tsumego App: Redefining a Centuries-Old Tradition for the AlphaGo Era

Tsumego problems have long been a cornerstone for improving fighting skills in Go, but they sometimes fall short when it comes to preparing players for the complexities of real-game scenarios. Powered by advanced AI, our app bridges this gap, delivering tsumego that mirrors real-game scenarios more closely than ever.

How Our App Transforms Combat Training:

  • Isolated Scenarios

Traditional tsumego focuses on internal eye spaces, ignoring the influence of surrounding stones and aji (hidden potential). In real games, nearby stones often dictate the outcome of life-and-death situations. Our app offers life-and-death problems grounded in real-game contexts, teaching you to analyze the entire board, not just localized positions.

  • Narrow Focus

Tsumego typically emphasizes final-stage fights, where eyes are either forming or being destroyed. But what about the earlier stages, when the board is still open, or conflicts are just beginning to take shape? Mastery in these early and mid-stage fights often determines the course of the fight. Our app challenges you with realistic battles across all stages, sharpening your tesuji and advanced tactics from the start.

  • Overlooked Evaluation Skills

Traditional tsumego clearly define objectives—kill or survive—leaving little room to develop judgment. In real games, however, players must evaluate positions and predict outcomes before acting. In our app, objectives are not pre-defined. You’ll learn to assess statuses, enabling you to capitalize on weaknesses, execute well-timed tenuki moves, and make decisions with confidence.

Our app Go: The Infinite Path is now open to public on Google Play.

Powered by cutting-edge AI, it shifts your combat training from the comfort of a closed lot to the real roads of Go. It’s a revolutionary approach that prepares you to face the true challenges of live gameplay.

Any recommendation is welcome.

We made a lot of changes based on feedback in the past 10 days. We’d like to share how our game look like now.

There are three problems in the attached screenshots. Each problem has two screeshots:

(1) At first, a status evaluation page would be shown asking you the marked white group’s status. Black moves first in all problems.

(2) After selecting whether the marked group is either dead or alive, the fight begins and players need to justify their choice by playing against AI.

Feedback is genuinely welcome.

I chose white is dead, so I needed to prove white is really dead by taking black and kill it. But I failed since it survived.

I chose white is alive, so I needed to prove white is really alive by taking white and form two eyes. I failed.

I chose white is alive, so I needed to prove white is really alive by taking white and form two eyes, which I failed again:(

Do you think the white stones marked in blue is dead or alive. Give “Today’s challenge” a shot in our app.

I saw this but I was confused as it just said you won after I played a move

When AI think your winrate is very high, you would win that level automatically. That is probably the reason. If you want to manually win every level, you can adjust the “Win Check” setting to “Manual (By Pass)”. In this case, you win only when you use “Pass” button and the life and death status is the same as you claimed.

What I mean is I never even see the “Dead” or “Alive” option so I just played on the board and it just marked it as correct.

There may be a bug. We probably need to look into that. Can you try clicking restart? Does the life or death buttons page show up after that?

Oh clicking restart resolved it. Weird though since it was this way before I solved it

Yeah. That is an issue we’ll check. It should show the selection one instead of that one.

White’s turn. Is it a kill?

Have you ever noticed how this very first tsumego you learned in go book can turn into a real challenge during a game? It’s white’s turn. Is the black group dead or alive? Even after practicing so many problems, it’s still very easy to get stuck in these real-game moments.

Our new free app integrates tsumego into real game contexts, presenting scenarios where factors like aji and the influence of nearby stones matter. Give it a try and see how it can enhance your real-game fighting skills!
