AI translation is terrible. Even google translate I often use. There should no such thing as auto translation. It is very wrong. The author do not control it. They may be even unaware of possible translated output.
We should not also prohibit use of translators.
I hope we never see it.
My bet is that it needs to be hooked up somehow. I think it would actually cost money in the sense of having to send tokens to Gemini or ChatGPT etc so it would have to be a conscious choice.
It depends on the language. Google Translate does a pretty good job for French-English. Not perfect, I sometimes see some mistakes, but good enough to communicate efficiently.
There is another issue. AI could hallucinate. It do it a lot. Google Translate is an AI.
It doesnāt depend on language. It do it on English. So we definitely do not want it.

What about a completely wrong translation that is absolutely grammatically correct and fits the meaning?

If I have doubt or if I donāt understand the translation I just warn about it and ask my chat partner to get a better one if possible.

How about this example. You ask someone about their favorite fruit and got answer āappleā. Will you ask for confirmation? Would it help? AI can match apple to the original word.

didnāt say clearly if we are for or against AI translation, but I suppose that those who voted āAI generated content can be allowed, but must be clearly identified as such, and have some relevance to thread in which it appearsā are generally in favor of allowing AI for translation as well.
(Personally I am among the 56% and I agree that AI can be used for translation if the message clearly says āmessage translated by AIā.)

But we discuss different here. We discuss upgrade that enables auto translation without human participation. It is different.
I dunno where you want to go. Translators are tools more and less perfect. With pros and cons. Itās not bad to me that people try to communicate, I accept that itās not perfect but better as nothing. I try to warn when I m not satisfied, what could I do more?

It is ok if the author use translator and copy paste output.

Yes. Maybe there is a parameter in the backend (I mean the config of discourse by OGS) so that OGS could process it according to the result of the poll (warn about auto translated text)?
We donāt know how auto-translation is implemented on Discourse, so I have no opinion. Iād be in favor of a feature similar to YouTube: everyone can write in whatever language. We always see the original text, but we can click on a button ātranslate into [the language defined in your settings]ā.
Alternatively, we could see the auto-translated text but next to it, there should be a button āsee originalā.
It also can be significantly improved by intelligent use. I often back-translate DeepLās output to see if the message remains. Or use my own knowledge of the languages involved to sanity check it, or replace parts of the output I know arenāt quite right
Definitely against integrating anything like that, though. People can just continue to use Google Translate or DeepL if they want to
