That’s great!
Can you post what the different starting points are supposed to be? Looks like there are five options if you count “skip”.
new: 25k (would be lower, if the rest of OGS supported lower)
basic: 22k
skip: 15k (higher deviation)
intermediate: 12k
advanced: 2k
Perhaps the kyu levels should be indicated, at least for intermediate and advanced? Something like
so that experienced players, who generally know the kyu-dan ranking system, can pick the most appropriate level?
Otherwise I’m sure many 2k players will consider themselves as “intermediate”.
This was debated at length earlier, and the “keep it simple” won out.
The deviation is still moderately high, so a 1d coming in at 12k won’t spend long there.
I dunno what is tested exactly. Is it open invitation to sandbag, i mean just for testing the implementation, menus, etc… or shall we test the rating too (and be at our level of play)?
In Beta you can do whatever you like
So yes, create new users, play them yourself against each other, see what happens to ratings etc.
As ~3k i totally agree with this one, i would also choose “intermediate” if i wouldnt know what ranks those are referring to ^^
FWIW, I agree - if it were me I’d put the numbers there. though I don’t think it’s a big deal either way.
I didn’t design it, I implemented what came out of the design discussion.
@dexonsmith @anoek @blindgorgon does this need another look?
Chess only has ELO, while Go also has old traditional system with a sense that clear to humans, not just math. So it may be more important in Go than in chess to not ignore that information. Though I think that chess site made mistake anyway.
also these k numbers on buttons is way to teach beginners about Go rank system, so they know that they better accept game of 22k and not 2k
That and I suppose chesscom’s ratings are probably somewhat decoupled but correlated to the FIDE ones, but OGS ranks have been intentionally adjusted to line up better with AGA and EGF around the “advanced” entry level. Not only that but at some of the rank ranges between “Basic” and “Intermediate” people will register with their OGS rank for instance when playing their first EGF tournament
It’s not that unnatural then to show some idea of ranks to these players picking these options
New proposal:
? Why not
should probably write the whole word kyu, just for clarity
The advantage of having just the letter, is that if you don’t know what it stands for, chances are you should choose a lower category which doesn’t list the starting rank. But I guess the advantage of writing it out is that it gives newer players a word they can google search if they want to learn more, so maybe it’s better on the whole. But on the other other hand, 5k is the normal way to write it
