“Sente - Online GO” App for Android

I have blue and it’s nice! But I’m not fussy!

I prefer blue. I don’t love the radial gradient, but that could just be change aversion at work

I use dark theme, so blue contrasts better in that setting. I unitetually tried salmon on dark theme, didn’t like it so much, but I imagine that is a bug.

Here’s why:
When I installed the app it started all dark themed, which is my system default, but difference between black and white stones is to subtle for me. So I went poking around settings trying to find a way to change it. Stones color cannot be set, but theme could, so I changed it from system default to light. Buuut that only changed highlight color to salmon and nothing else.

Reson I think it is a bug is because changeing system theme to light switches corectly whole of the gui, and not just highlight from blue to salmon…

Anyway, thank you for your continued efforts.

@Popz regarding my comments on the “highest rated win agains” part of the stats page, here is an example. I recently won in a game against a player who is currently 2d. The stats page still says my highest-rated win was against a 2k. I think it might be because they had a rank of 2d+ when I beat them but it has since gone down. If so, then it is using the rating at the time of the game internally, but it is displaying the current rank. This isn’t how it is supposed to work, is it? Could it be changed to use the rank of the opponent at the time of the game, please? I think it would be clearer and perhaps also simpler like that. Thanks.

Between these two icons, I prefer the salmon-coloured one. This blue seems too cold.

Hey @MrAlex, thanks again for the nice update.

I am using dark mode in the app and it occured to me that the new ingame icons for points, clock and byoyomi are invisible against the black background. Maybe make them gray so they are visible in both color modes?

Hello @KitsuneNoGo, there is already an issue on GitHub for that.

tbh, I was a little put off by the new salmon-colored icon, other than that, I think the new icons and look&feel of the app are great, but this color does indeed stand out among other apps, but more because it’s so weird.
Blue or green would be better.

@MrAlex I think I’ve noticed a small bug/issue. I’m playing Canadian byo yomi games and it seems the time displayed in the app is not quite right. It starts off showing “main time+byo yomi/number of stones” which is fine but then when main time runs out it displays “byo yomi time+byo yomi time/number of stones” but it should just be "byo yomi time/number of stones.

It’s not a massive problem and I guess Canadian is rarely used. But it would be nice for the time to be displayed properly in this case.

Thank you for all your work and Happy New Year!

In fact @MrAlex I think it’s slightly worse than I thought. The “+time/stones” part seems to not update live, maybe it’s a once a day/move thing. So we see “time A + time B/stones” which is very confusing. It should just say “time A/stones” as time B is just some frozen figure (or sometimes the same as time A as in above reply.
I hope this makes sense!

My impressions

Positive:

  • GUI is very clean and stylish
  • Joseki explorer is simply great
  • Glad this app is open source

Negative:

  • Less bloated would be better: KataGo is not something I would expect from this app, there are already multiple dedicated apps for that. Supporting the core functionality for OGS much more important
  • Hard to find games since this app doesn’t support creating custom games, although it’s nice that this app encourages to use automatch, so maybe it would become more popular in the future
  • Lack of byoyomi sound alert makes it too hard to not lose blitz games on time
  • Salmon-colored icon would stand out better, so many apps use the “neutral” blue already

I feel the opposite, salmon is really similar to wood, so it blends in with other gobans which are a common icon for Go apps, whereas while a lot of other apps have blue icons, not a lot of Go apps do, so if you have your Go apps grouped together it is the blue that stands out the most IMO

Before I get into some replies, I just wanted to let you guys that I’ve been spending the last few weeks adapting the Interactive Way To Go into an in-app tutorial. It’s taking a lot of time, but I think it’s worth it, as that might be the first thing a lot of users see that is related to GO. It’s definitely not my forte, so if anybody has any comments on the matter, now would be the time.

Could you kindly create in issue (here)[Issues · acristescu/OnlineGo · GitHub] describing the problem? I’ll pick it up when I have the time.

Thank you for the kind words, glad you liked it.

I understand that a somebody who is already 3k might not appreciate katago, there are people that will be using the app that have never heard of OGS, or indeed never heard of GO before. For them it would look quite silly to have an app to play go that does not… you know… play go  And the only “bloat” this entails to you is a single button on the main screen that you can just ignore.

You guessed correctly that I’m trying to encourage automatch. This is one point in which I respectfully disagree with the creators of OGS. I think OGS has waaaaay too many ways of starting a game thus fragmenting the userbase needlessly. I might consider adding ladders at some point if I can package them in a simple manner (e.g. randomly challenge a ladder user if you can’t find a game in 30 seconds).

True, that will have to be improved. At the very least, some obvious UI thing such as a red ticking down timer should be implemented.

Hey @MrAlex

Ranking formula needs to be updated cause of the new ranking system.

30-
ln(score÷525)×23,15

Thanks!

Thanks for the heads-up, @Popz has created the fix already, however the app is in no state to be released right now due to some miscalculations on my part. I’ll release something ASAP.

Lol i dont even begin to imagine how you must feel when playing go if your mind breaks over such trivial matters

New version incoming. Sorry for the long delay, I’m trying to get to grips with this strict lockdown we have over here. Anyway, here’s what’s new:

  • New tutorial based on the now defunct “Interactive way to go” (with permission). It’s incomplete right now, but there is plenty to send feedback about
  • Fixed back button navigation once and for all (hopefully). For those that care, we’re now using Jetpack Navigation under the hood
  • Reimplemented the learn page as it was looking a bit dated
  • Fixed dark mode icon issues
  • Made dark mode colors more consistent between screens
  • Fixed launcher icon color to always be blue (there was a bug in which it appeared salmon in light mode and blue in dark mode)
  • Changed the stones images to look a bit sharper, particularly on tablets
  • Changed the board background in both light and dark themes
  • Changed the stones shadow to make them “pop” a little more
  • Made the board previews one the main page flatter. Should look better and be a lot faster (only noticeable on old devices)
  • Introduced a subtle animation for the board (only in tutorials for now) when stones are captured
  • Adjusted the displayed time of the games to show a bit more detail (e.g. 1d 23h instead of 1 day) - Thanks to v011 for the contribution)
  • Changed the rank formula to match the new OGS changes (thanks to Popz for the contribution)
  • (under the hood) brought in some bleeding edge libraries such as Jetpack Compose. For now these are mostly on the Learn and Tutorial screens, but more will come in the future, so please report any new issues (crashes, slowness, weird board states)

Yeah, I spent a lot of time tweaking the look and feel of the board, I felt inspired by @HongAnhKhoa 's screenshots and the fact that the android ones looked very dated in comparison. Some of the code in there was more than 7 years old at this point I think…

Please do provide as much feedback as possible for the tutorial. Although probably not useful by itself to anybody here, I feel it is very important as it will be introduction to GO that literally tens of thousands of new players will get.
