Surely you would not update anything just to use the latest technology? Did it not also improve either what the app does or its maintainability?
Updating the apps tech is important because:
- if your tech gets too old, Google will not allow you to push updates anymore and eventually remove you altogether
- one of the main reasons this app exists is for me to keep my skills up-to-date
- makes the app not look outdated
As for my latest update: I did not only update the stats screen I completely rewrote it with a ton of new stats.
Hello
I’m using Sente-Online Go.
When I want to create a custom game and I choose an opponent, there is HTTP Error 403. And I can’t play.
Anyone with the same problem on any solution to solve my problem ?
Thanks a lot !
I’ve moved this to the Sente online go thread for @MrAlex to see
Thanks for the bug report. We can’t reproduce the error, can you please provide a screenshot of the challenge details (and the player you’re challenging)? Perhaps we can get more understanding of what’s going on.
Thanks for jour answer !
Here is the challenge détails (the opponent is iRun_63)
FYI, the opponent created his ogs account today)
Thanks for your help
- when does the error happen? when you press “play” or when the other user accepts it?
- can you please try challenging somebody else (for example me, “MrAlex”)?
- have you tried challenging him/her to a NON-ranked game? Does that make any difference?
PS: I tried challenging iRun_63
and the challenge was issued.
Later edit: @krichtof77 the only error I see on your account is “Can not play a ranked game with rank difference > 9”, please try a non-ranked game.
@iRun_63 cannot play a rated game with you because when you enter the ranking system, your starting rank is 12k (see his profile) while yours is 25k so there is more as 9k difference.
You will have to wait his rank to lower (by himself, playing other players) or you can play unrated with him.
Thanks for your help @MrAlex and @Groin ! You’re right
I just created a new game which is non ranked, and it works !
One last question @MrAlex : I just saw “HTTP 403 Error”. Where can you see the message “Can not play a ranked game with rank difference > 9” ?
Hey all,
I think I found a bug in the face-to-face mode.
Steps to Reproduce
I explain my reproduction from Black’s point of view. But it happens for White, too.
This seems to happen only for handicap stones (tested with zero, two, and four handicap stones).
This happens with any board size (tested with 9x9, 13x13, and 19x19).
See the GIF for an example reproduction.
- Start a face-to-face game with handicap stones.
- Play some moves.
- Place a black stone.
- Press “Previous” to undo the last move.
Actual Behaviour
- The last played stone disappears (rightly so).
- The colour of all handicap stones toggles (white stones become black; vice versa).
- The next played stone is white.
Expected Behaviour
- The last played stone disappears.
- The colour of all stones stays the same.
- The next played stone is black.
Thank you for the detailed report. I confirm I can reproduce it. I’ll see if I can find time to do something about it, I don’t have much time right now because I’m relocating halfway across the globe
Hi, everyone, MrAlex,
First of all - thank you, both to the OGS website creators and to MrAlex and the community for creating the Android app and being so supportive!
I’m quite new to the game of Go and a very fresh user of OGS and the Sente - Online GO app. I tested playing on the website on my phone, in the Firefox browser, and I also just tried out the app today. I have a question about the notifications, I also searched the thread here, but still I want to ask and check with you, sorry if I’m raising a topic that has been discussed already.
My main goal is to get notified when it’s my turn to play in a Correspondence game, on my phone.
-
I’m on a Motorola Edge 40 Neo, Android 13
-
Tried using Firefox - works great for playing but no notifications, no idea if there is a chance to have them there
-
Tried adding the website to my Home Screen (from Firefox), works fine to quickly access the website, and it even asked me if I want to enable OGS Desktop notifications, but I still don’t get any, I suppose they only work on a PC web browser?
-
Installed Sente - Online GO this morning - playing the game works perfectly well, and I did get notifications a couple of times (Correspondence game with a friend). They were under “Silent notifications” though, so I tried to change the settings to:
- “Unrestricted” App battery usage
- “Default” (instead of “Silent”) notifications
- “Background data” already enabled
- “Notification” Permission already allowed
Then I stopped getting notifications.
-
I tried reverting some options (reverted to Optimized battery usage, though it should be worse, not better, but it used to work before I changed it to Unrestricted) - still no notifications.
-
I then deleted and reinstalled the app, logged in again, it asked me for Notification permissions - allowed - still no notifications.
-
Then I turned the data and wifi off, charged my phone for a bit. Later - turned the data on - boom - got notifications that it’s my turn (I don’t know if the app woke up after detecting data is now on or something?)
I already saw that MrAlex wrote "What doesn’t work:… “notifications of any kind while outside the app. While these would be quite easy to implement, they are hard to implement properly (e.g. without pointlessly eating your battery life)” and that there were some discussions here in the thread that the notifications don’t work if the app is closed.
So, what would everyone recommend, what is the best workaround to get reliable notifications, is there any way to make it work with the browser (Firefox?) or is there a way to get them work consistently from the app, like “Unrestricted” battery usage combined with not closing the app but keeping it minimized, would it send regular notifications then, which can be configured to be “default” and have sound / vibration?
Thanks a lot in advance!
Hi Theorn, thank you for the kind words. If I said that notifications don’t work while outside of the apps, it’s probably a (very) old post. They did work for the past 8 years or so, the thing is they are not instant. The app basically checks once in a while for you and notifies you if it sees anything new. How often it checks depends on the condition of the phone: for example if you’re charging the phone and on wifi it checks about once every 15 minutes, but if not it checks more rarely. This is to conserve battery.
I’m still hoping that Anoek will eventually implement push notifications, but until then, this is how it will remain.
The settings you changed probably didn’t brake the notifications, is just you didn’t give them enough time to get fetched.
Maybe you already tried but have you changed to “default” by long pressing the notification itself to get these options:
Otherwise I use the app all the time and get notifications reliably.
Thanks for the replies!
@teapoweredrobot - thanks, I did change that one, as far as I understand from the info on the UI and from what MrAlex wrote it shouldn’t affect receiving the notification, but it does enable sound and vibration for them
@MrAlex - thanks for the info, I guess I was impatient and opened the app or the website manually quite soon, while the notification would have come a bit later I will keep the Unrestricted battery usage and default (with sound / vibration) notification for the future. It looks like it works perfectly fine last night and today, when I just leave it for a bit, so that’s a great solution!
Thanks again!

Have you ever considered making the timer for how often the app checks for new updates a configurable value in the app settings? I guess it’s hard coded now, or is it something that the OS dictates and the app doesn’t have control over? I for one would love to sacrifice a few % of my battery to be able to configure the timer myself
- especially if it’s a lot longer wait time on battery and with cellular data (without WiFi).
-
Just out of curiosity - I guess there is no way to get browser notifications working on the phone?
Hi, I see my thread was linked but I was told I should reply here. I would like to suggest adding custom board backgrounds on the Sente app through urls like we do on the regular pc version. That would be really cool. Hopefully that wouldn’t be too difficult. Hope you see this devs (:. Thanks.
Your intuition is correct, and about 7 years ago Google clamped down on apps abusing the battery life of the Android phones. Unless you’re whitelisted by Google themselves, you can’t really poll as often as you want. I actually think that was a good move by them as the battery life of Android phones in that era drastically improved (as in, doubled!).
The real solution here is to implement push notifications, but I can’t do that without one of the backend devs
Yeah, it’s a decent feature, but I’m afraid I don’t have the bandwith for it right now. If somebody else decided to give it a go, I wouldn’t object.
This doesn’t effect me personally, but I will add this in case it is useful. OGS is about to implement custom stones as well, which I am very excited for, and I am going to create a tutorial on my app Tsumego Dragon to show an easy to use copy paste feature to allow the boards and stones you unlock to be used on OGS. In just a simple copy button for your graphic choice. Where the url to the image is copied.
Clear, thanks for providing so much additional information! We can only hope OGS starts supporting sending push notifications someday.
