Thoughts on the strongest players over time

Huang Longshi lived during the time of Honinbo Dosaku (second half of the 17th century). Both of them are legendary for their innovation and pure skill putting them far above the others of their time. Because they never played against each other, we can only speculate as to who was the stronger of the two.

What interests me more is who filled the void in the 1700s between these legends and where our table begins. In Japan we have the line of Meijin: Inoue Dosetsu Inseki, Honinbo Dochi, and Honinbo Satsugen. Similarly, the Chinese Guoshou: Liang Weijin, Fan Xiping, Shi Ding’an…

Definitely agreed, she had the misfortune of not being able to actively play professional top flight precisely during her peak. Unfortunately a lot of her win record came from when she either was before her peak, or after her peak.
