Yeah, the discoverability here is probably a big reason to keep these opt-out. It’s easy enough for me to turn off a notification I don’t like. It’s impossible for me to turn on a notification I don’t know about.
Though it would be good to keep an eye on the opt-out rates and make sure there aren’t egregious posters.
I’m arriving late to the discussion, but since you wanted users’ opinion and I am not completely on the same page as the apparent majority:
I like visible notifications when there is a physical, live tournament being broadcast; not for any streamer.
I would like to be able to dismiss notifications to later find them again in my bell menu
If it was only me I would prefer a three-level notification system (1. sitewide announcements ; 2. broadcast tournaments ; 3. streamers or other online tournaments starting) with the possibility to have level 2 being more visible that a number next to the bell, and in any case, getting the full history of notifications (or at least the past week) in my bell menu.
This being said, what you are suggesting is ok for me (not worse than the current situation).
Great feedback. To me this sort of tiered importance schema could/should best be implemented through user notification preferences. Since every user will have a different preference as to what is displayed and how prominently, maybe we could just make it customizable in user settings. (So I’d say we should gather this information to become part of another dev issue addressing the user prefs)
The notification indicator is enough for me. Clicking on it should bring me to a log with an history of these notifications.
Pop up are unnecessary and boring.
