Did anyone try a go variant with stones played on the lines? I wonder if that’s doable.

Do you mean stones on the lines, but not on the intersections of the lines?

That’s intriguing, because on an empty square you could move on any side, but a move on a side prevents moves on the adjacent sides.
There’s no room for playing on all four sides of a single square.

It seems that the way that stones could block other sides from being played would give a flavor that is somewhat similar to the Pixel Go (with 2x2 blobs), mentioned above:

Pixel go you place 2x2 blocks, which is a Tetris shape. You could expand it to playing any Tetris shaped blob.
