Team Go might be the obvious thing to go for, especially if in future there’s plans to extend it to more than just 2v2.
I like Team Go as an alternative, if Pair Go already has a specific meaning.
I’m not totally certain but I’m pretty sure both organisations enforce the gender specification and play proper pair go. OGS has no way of enforcing this and so we should implement rengo unless we want to start demanding binary genders of all users.
These are also Go…
Yeah, I’m absolutely not suggesting we do that. I just thought Pair Go was the english translation of Rengo. Kind of a shame that such a generic term was used for something so specific.
The problem, is that team go doesn’t include 3 colour go and 4 colour go, which are both popular rengo variants.
You mean like naming the game “Go” in the first place?
Perhaps Rengo would be inaccurate if that’s the case. AFAIK, @GreenAsJade doesn’t intend to implement 3+ color go at this point in time.
Not inaccurate at all, he also doesn’t intend to implement 6 player go (2 teams of 3 or visa verse). Rengo encompasses all Go that is played with more than 2 total people.
I really don’t see those being included in the next 8 years if it took a 8 years to get Rengo
I think it would be much better if one started introduce full on variants to have a separate category at that point, or just a bunch of game modifiers the way https://go.kahv.io does. (Even there they have separated Rengo from 3 and 4 colour go)
My point is that it doesn’t matter that Team Go doesn’t include 3-color go.
Once you have the hard work of a rengo backbone implemented, expanding on its options is much easier.
To you…
Also a fair point.
Why would “Team Go” require 3-color Go ? I fail to see the reasoning.
It’s 2vs2, it’s literally Go in teams, and it’s much more immediately comprehensible than “Rengo”.
“Team Go” sounds like a league/tournament format.
Frankly I don’t think it’s a fair point. I do care about the naming, I do care about correctness.
What I don’t care about is how 3-color Go affects the naming, since it’s objectively not part of the feature being discussed. (@BHydden conveniently left the 3-color part out of the quote.)
Anyway, I think I’ve said what I can say I’ll bow out
If you follow the reply chain, shinuito was referring to my comment
Perhaps in that moment I got too defensive, you saying “it doesn’t matter” irked me the wrong way, regardless of what words came after that.
I am still opposed to changing the name rengo to team go, but I would certainly accept team go as a bitter alternative to misrepresenting pair go which is a specific thing that already exists.
Oof thanks for clarifying. That one is a fair point… sorry @shinuito! (Although I’d be willing to bet money that 3 or 4 color go is more than a couple years off)
Acknowledged, I’ll try to choose words more carefully in the future. Soft skills amirite?
