Assuming isn’t good enough if you want quality stats to test a hypothesis.
You may be right. That guy almost always plays handicap games, and hence his even games are almost always against someone of the same rank (± 1), but I noticed a small percentage of even games with 2 ranks difference (like 22k vs 20k), and in the 6-7 examples I examined, the stronger player always got white.
It appears the default is “automatic”. So yes, lots of people will just stick with the default.

We can’t just assume that everybody changes their setting to conclude that there is no need to account for this bias.
