Women in go

You just gave information about your age in this post:

It’s bad that a lot of people can’t be honest on the internet about their identity without fearing harassment. But it’s good, that people don’t have to disclose their identity in order to play and enjoy go online.

@JethOrensin, would you agree?

That sexism is a problem is clear to me, a woman. If I want to join a club I must find two other women to join. I am not going to re-explain why, if you can’t see it, you can’t. I can’t help you there.

Let’s leave that aside for a moment.
In some earlier post I said “VPN is a problem” and I wasn’t joking. I think marketing algorithms is a serious problem. What is your opinion on that?

Marketing algorithms? You re welcome to develop, please, on how you think it’s linked with the OP.

VPN? It has a side about anonymous, no control which one can fear. It’s a bit on the image of internet, a net of horizontal communication opposed to a vertical media like TV. All is a huge field of social experimentation. VPN for me let me pass the firewall but i live without it. Same question, how you think it’s linked with the OP?

VPN is a part of free access from everywhere, so it is directly related to culture and politics, but it is also related to hiding your data as “audience” from marketers.

I wrote somewhere in this thread that if we search inspiration for hobbies, Go is quite unlikely to pop-up. I also believe that is is even harder for Go to pop-up in a woman’s screen (related to the OP) since the algorithms will likely use the data about “female audiences” and suggest accordingly. I think that, to take up a hobby, you should first hear about it. It is easier to hear about Go online than from friends and colleagues and that’s why marketing is crucial. (also pokémon :stuck_out_tongue: )

I hadn’t seen this search option, but it fits

Yes i believe too that. Luckily we got some other means of inspiration (mangas /hikaru, movies and art, news/Alphago…) which don’t seem to be gender oriented at least.

I’m myself very reluctant on advertising but that’s me. It exists and is far from doing a good job on the culture side. (besides selling ofc)

“They basically are a type of person that requires attention like a puppy. If you ignore them and don’t give them any status for being a grill (sic) they will get flustered and leave.”

(Slightly OT but omg why do I google things)

Truth is my manga culture is limited. I hope at least that hikaru isn’t gender oriented by the manga world.

Internet is a weird place. Probably because planet earth is a weird place.
What do you think about Mikaylah (@mikaylahau)? Is she trolling sexists? Is she pleasing them? Is she making money out of them?

I’m starting to see other girls doing like her on tiktok.

Sometimes I can’t believe what I see, but it’s there, on videos, a whole channel full of one single kind of videos: a girl playing dumb for sexist’s amusement.
On the same platform where you can find whatever kind of pride you like and many more that you didn’t even imagine.

“Silly a$$es!” (I. Asimov)

I don’t think you mean it that way, but this kind of argument is usually used in the way of “Aha!!! You see??? They want us to treat them like objects!! They just complain for show!!! We knew it!!! They just want our wallets!!!”

This one woman flaunting her boobs negates everything we say about us being more than boobs. She exists, so discussion is moot.
ETA: for clarification, I don’t mean the one you posted, I don’t know her. I mean whoever woman used in the above argument.

I try to avoid saying this, but I don’t think that will contribute to this discussion.

There is the same argument at the end (first page) of the second topic you mentioned before too. Didn’t copy that here ofc.

I don’t know anything about this specific case, but in my opinion you raise a good point: In modern day society there are unfortunately many entities (be it people or companies) that monetise sex appeal. I believe this is also a factor that tends to foster sexism.

What, if anything, would you propose as a solution? I believe it’s morally wrong to present oneself in a sexual way to anyone not their spouse, but I wouldn’t want to make it illegal or anything. I see it as something one should not do, male or female, but something one should be allowed to do in spite of that, because it does not harm anyone else. So my solution would be, no solution needed despite it being wrong.

OH MY GOD PLEASE JUST NO

This is the time to split this topic if anyone’s listening.

This is precisely what I was trying to say, albeit with more clarity.

Another great point. I can’t help but notice that perhaps at least one person on this forum has “harassed” me by implying my age. Not to mention any names though…

I could have just kept quiet about my age, but I made the choice to deal with the potential consequences and somehow learn to look past what might come of that, without making a stink about it. I know many of my views are quite “radical” to many people on here and that is okay. While I am not a perfect human being, I have worked harder to look past my pride and see where other people are coming from, maybe sometimes changing my stubborn mind about some things.

I think everyone, myself included, can continue to work on caring less about personal feelings, even verbal harassment, and actually try to see where another person is coming from. And all the better if one can have a nice reasonable discussion without verbally directing attacks on people and instead only criticize ideas in a rational manner.

I was going to end my statement, with the above quotes, but then I saw this post at the bottom of the thread and just want to say that, though many might disagree with the above statement, I for one agree with this entirely. I had a similar conversation with another friend once and this was the ultimate conclusion I came to.

These kinds of contemplations are usually most challenging when one is a Christian though.

A lot of this thread is reminding me of that post in the Facebook group by a woman asking whether there were any women’s Go groups she could join.

The first and loudest response was long and argumentative, questioning why this kind of group would be wanted, and suggesting that women’s-only groups really only make sense for therapy and 12-step groups.

I think about that a lot.

Anyway I don’t have much else to add to this conversation especially now that it seems to be devolving into religious morality, but it’s worth mentioning while I’m here that the Women’s Online Go Club exists as an official chapter in the AGA and is open to Go players outside the AGA as well.

Feel free to reach out to me if you’re interested.

I don’t have a solution, just thought it might be a worthwhile observation and was curious what other people think about that.

Sorry I did not mean to start an off topic discussion.

The environment for male-dominated sports/games is generally toxic for women, especially online. You can see it in Go, League of Legends, etc. Since the majority of the participants are male, they are unfortunately more interested in flirting or hitting on female participants rather than respecting them as competitors.

League of Legends is toxic period. I’ve heard arguments that that’s a good thing since it gives people a place to vent, and develop a thicker skin in a relatively safe environment. I think they have a point. I don’t play League anymore, but I only stopped because I couldn’t get it running on Linux, and I got tired of booting into Windows to play League all the time.
