100+ unranked win in a row lol

That’d generally be a consideration, but these days I can do a lot in the backend as well.

But more specifically, I am reasonably certain there is an argument why doing the “Glicko increase uncertainty with the passage of time” was deemed “problematic”, but I can’t recall what that reason is.

Maybe this? Don't show the ranks of players in unranked games by GreenAsJade · Pull Request #2323 · online-go/online-go.com · GitHub

Yeah, Glicko was designed with in person tournaments in mind, so a bunch of games played in one session, then presumably a few months or years or whatever inbetween. On OGS though a lot of our games are correspondence games so it gets kind of weird, you can start and finish many games while some other game is going on, and you could start and be actively playing games for a year before one even finishes, things like that - so measuring the time between games as a measurement of end times isn’t really what you’d want to do in a lot of cases.

All that said, I did play with enabling that and fiddle with it and whatnot, and as I recall it either didn’t really make a notable difference overall for us, with whatever parameters I was using (I did try many as I recall).

That’s it.

I think there’s a discussion to be had about “what does ‘didn’t make a notable difference overall’ mean?”.

In this instance, we’re not looking for an “overall difference” we are looking for a very specific difference…

I’ve thought of a reason why this is no good anyhow: humble rank.

If we dramatically increase glicko uncertainty of players, humble rank will (where it’s working properly) cause them to be matched with players in the lower skill band of their uncertainty. That is a sandbagger’s delight for sure.

Yeah, that would be an issue. On a side note, I never really understood humble rank. Like if we don’t have a good idea of a player’s rank, we opt to underestimate it? What problem is that trying to solve?

I’m just moving all this to it’s own thread - the entry points, beginner experience and all is interesting, but unrelated to the OP wanted to deal with players being able to play unranked forever after achieving a possibly misleading rank. (Not 100% unrelated, but it is a different discussion)
