15 kyu vs 12 kyu - when to tenuki

I feel like I put too many stones at corners because I don’t feel safe/ I cannot judge if the corner is ok or not. Can I get a general review of what I my biggest weakness ? I’d like to improve

Thanks a lot!

Did you realize that (among others) at moves 105, 107, 109, 111, 113, 127, 131, 221, 227 the stone you put would die?

Moves 85, 133, 197, 199, 225 are worth 0 point or lose points, do you understand why?

If you are not sure if your group is safe then tenuki. Only add a move if you can read something your opponent can do that makes you feel really sad. Sometimes you will tenuki when you shouldn’t, but better to err on the tenuki-too-much than defend-too-much side and learn about those weaknesses you didn’t see than just play passive and lose without learning much.

You are not utilising all the best shapes and you are playing mostly extensions and diagonal moves. Please have a look at this:

You can try experimenting with the faster extensions/approaches and that will be a big improvement.

I picked up gobook.eu to build my knowledge from ground up. Thanks for commenting

BTW. I’m on page 25 and I already feel personally attack and schooled about my bad play style and mistakes  I can’t wait to read more. I’d highly recommend this book to newcomers.

I am glad you find it useful  We were having a similar discussion in another topic that had a game review and it is very surprising how often - even in high dan games - the good shape moves are the vast majority of moves being played when you get past the first moves of the game.

It is very rare (in some life and death fights for example) where the bad shape like an empty triangle will be a good move.

What this means is that when it comes to shape, we are not yet in any “style of play” because having good shape is the basis and the staple of every style. Which is another reason why it is a good topic where everyone can improve without having to alter their playstyle to fit the style that a pro or AI or a teacher advocates for.

Good luck and have fun playing! If you have any questions on the book’s contents, feel free to send me a PM.

We all enjoy to play shapes. These are source of inspiration but shapes without reading is the trap too.

Example of good empty triangle in one of my games: Is this an empty triangle? • Life In 19x19
