No discussion about changing the language would be complete without the obligatory Orwell reference, so I will supply it. I recommend his classic essay, “Politics and the English Language.”
I really miss Carlin. He was such a great observer of language, and nobody seems to do this anymore.
This article isn't what you would expect at a first glance
Also I must warn it's NSFW
Not the subject per se but definitely the keywords and some references
But it's so 2021 that I couldn't not try posting it
Seriously tho NSFW warnings
As an island state, Barbados is highly vulnerable to hurricanes and other natural hazards, and is particularly susceptible to the potential impacts of climate change.
It looks like they got the message and took the appropriate measures .
I think this shows what the COP26 trully achieved: →
‘‘Extra doses of […] were provided to medical centres […]. People were also urged to stay at home and avoid […].’’
I can see the scorpion deniers from here.
Supposedly they rely on textile exports and energy exports but yes, they will have difficult times ahead, since the Nile is part of almost everything they do.
In the spirit of George Carlin, I’ve just learned that what we used to call a “traffic light” (three syllables) is now called a “traffic control signal” (six syllables). This is known as progress.
In Greece we say “management” in most cases, eg. traffic management cameras (κάμερες διαχείρισης κυκλοφορίας) to avoid the word “control”, despite the fact that cameras are not used to “manage” traffic flows but to ‘‘control’’ speed limit.
I have a sneaky suspicion that politicians have nothing to do with vocabulary and that we are victims of translation software guidelines which try to harmonize terminology worldwide and simply cancel terms that do not translate well. That, or we’re living in a dark book and we don’t know it.
It could have been worse. Imagine if someone linguistically competent was actually making all those changes:
and speaking of politicians, I like how some of them are getting so blatantly honest in the “weeeell, there are people who are going to vote for me, anyway” kind of way. A couple of days ago, a local politician declared in an interview that he would like to run for office for the regional administration instead of his usual effort to run for parliament.
Naturally the reporter asked him what brought this change about and the politician responded that it is all about the money
I just saw that and for some reason I’ve been giggling about it all day.
To be exact he said that “… the money is no longer being distributed (by the EU) to the countries themselves, but funds are allocated by region and that is what we should focus on”
Mrs Porter was arrested and on Thursday faced court for the second time in her life. The first was in 2005 when she was convicted of assaulting her brother with three sticks of rhubarb in an unrelated family spat.
