2022: HOLD MY TEA! šŸµ

A full ban would be consistent with the position held by many sport federations: football (soccer), basketball, figure skating, hockey, athletics… The point is that a single of those bans is meaningless, but together they can significantly contribute to the isolation of Russia on the world scene.

Note that my purpose is to explain rather than support this position. I understand there are many arguments that could be made in favor of a softer approach, with Russian players being able to play under neutral flag (as was decided for Chess edit: or Formula 1 as mentioned by @jlt).

I don’t think it has anything to do with xenophobia. I think (most of) the world is just closing ranks to support Ukraine in whatever way they can, isolating Russia as much as possible to increase the pressure on Putin to stop his invasion of Ukraine.

Note however that some sports allow Russians to compete under a neutral flag.

The question under discussion is about false hope versus no hope. Sisyphus is highly relevant to that. Yes, I know it was a punishment. See my further comment here: Webcomics - #95 by Conrad_Melville

I retract, it’s not in the theme of ā€˜best year eva’. I was simply pouting after losing a couple of games, it carried over into here unfortunately.

I guess the most important thing is not to lose your sense of humor:

ā€œHave you captured a Russian tank or armored personnel carrier and are worried about how to declare it? Keep calm and continue to defend the Motherland! There is no need to declare the captured Russian tanks and other equipment, […]ā€

I suppose we find the article funny because we’re not the target audience.

…
(ā€œAw, look! A stray oil tanker, can a keep it?ā€
ā€œSure, if you feed it and clean the mess after itā€)

"You are victims of your governments’ actions. "
I understand that what the Ukrainians have suffered is worse, but I don’t understand what’s the point of adding more innocent victims (or guilty only of being born in Russia/Belarus). Not even the possibility of being neutral.

I’m sorry but I see this as giving in to tantrums.

ā€œwe’re sorry you paralympic athletes are excluded by something not of your own making, but the majority wants their comfortā€

Oh, the irony!!

As Peter Tatchell said…

While I never rejoice at the killing of anyone, his death means one less mass murderer on the loose. Those who live by the sword should not be surprised if they die by the sword. This will mean that he is no longer able to abduct, torture and kill Chechen LGBTs and dissidents, which is is a good thing.

Emotionally, I do rejoice.

Another notch for the hysteria, per a radio report this morning: A famous Washington, D.C., restaurant, Russia House, has closed due to recent vandalism. They may never reopen because they had already been badly hurt by the lockdowns. This is an American-owned business, founded generations ago by immigrants.

Sport is another matter, but in terms of economic sanctions there’s not much you can do without also hurting regular citizens. We just don’t know how to do otherwise.

There are already many sanctions against officials and oligarchs, and it did have some effect (France and Germany both seized Russian yachts today for example).

Unfortunately, in practice these targeted sanctions are often ineffective, if only because those people are pretty good at confusing the chain of ownership (assets are rarely held directly in their name but through an international chain of legal entities or nominees).

If the Brangelina divorce comes in I’ll just die.

It’s a common secret that cinema villains favour felines, I guess the felines overhear some sensitive info now and then

31.05.2022 is in 3 months. This is analogue to RGF’s proposition

a) to suspend the RGF membership in the EGF for 3 months, after which to return to this issue

Excluding cats longer than go players would be too cruel.

I must say it was shared with me as a fact and I found it debunked by chance.

Note: Mean country values (scale from 0 to 3).

ok… but what do the Nice country values scale from/to?
