Many “gun safes” are made to horrendously poor standards. And of course there are those who don’t even use those.
And most locks apparently, but gun safes do seem to be bad on their own category …
(in fairness to the last one, I read in the comments that they fixed that issue along with many others, apparently)
I do not question a toddler’s capability to get their hands where they shouldn’t, but I’ve always believed at least a portion of “the child did it” is actually “an adult did it, but we’ll pin it on the kid so everyone walks”.
You can’t open something if there is nothing that interests you inside.
How many kids would open a safe if you locked a grammar notebook in it?
It’s not a question of bad locks.
Have you met kids? They naturally explore everything with curiosity. They don’t know it’s boring until after they’ve opened it.
Bank error in your favour, collect £200.
I do not travel/rent cars, but I know that some people here travel and thus might rent a car, so this is news to me:
It seems like a horrible breach of security O_o
… and behold the negative balance on your account. I’m a bit puzzled by the stories of people withdrawing thousands and immediately spending them.
It is a fantasy of a lot of people and when it becomes reality, a lot of people suspend their inhibitions and go fulfill their fantasy. Like those people that drove into the river to get the money, after some “madman” went over the bridge and opened a briefcase and threw a lot of 50-100-200 euro bills in and a lot of bystanders saw that.
The money could have been fake, but they dove in anyway. We do not have a video from that, but we got this meme out of it, so the world is actually richer now.
P.S. Playing the drinking game of taking a shot every time he says “money” (lefta) can actually kill you
Chilling.
“The Coming Technological Singularity: How To Survive In The Post-Human Era” by Vernor Vinge (meanwhile deceased), professor for mathematics and computer science, revered SF author.
From 1993, i.e. 30 years (!) ago.
The abstract begins thus:
Within thirty years, we will have the technological means to create superhuman intelligence. Shortly after, the human era will be ended.
I couldn’t find an obit on Vinge. Why do you say he is deceased?
Oh DAMN, it seems you’re right … I seemed to “remember” another SF author (was it Greg Bear? David Brin?) writing about his last meeting with Vinge, and that he had died …
VERY GOOD that he’s alive then … and terribly sorry for the confusion!
And “What If the Singularity Does NOT Happen” … What If the Singularity Does NOT Happen
