A friend of mine is running an ‘institute for humor’. So I guess he IS a joke expert! (At least he claims to be …)
If that’s his main job, then I guess the joke’s on us and I’d agree that such a funny situation would be grounds to make him a joke expert.
Comedians just make jokes for a living.
He lives a joke for a living.
Therefore he is an expert
P.S.
I googled it. Those “institutes for humor”, funnily enough, seem like very “serious businesses”.
Yesterday, I couldn’t remember the story that did this (at least the basic idea). It was C. M. Kornbluth’s “The Silly Season” (F&SF, Fall 1950). The “silly season,” still in wide use when I was a kid, referred to August, when there was usually no important news because everyone (including Congress) was on vacation. Consequently, newspapers and TV filled their space/time with weird stories like flying saucers and psychic phenomena. The perfect time for real flying saucers to show up. The term has passed out of use, probably because now we live in a perpetual silly season.
G. K. Chesterton once commented (I’m paraphrasing from memory): ‘People think I’m not serious because I’m funny, but serious is not the opposite of funny. The opposite of funny is unfunny.’
I do not know why, but I read “silly season” with Duffy Duck’s voice. Maybe the word is cool with Duffy’s accent?
Though admittedly the line “pronoun trouble” (1:55 in the video ) might also be very useful nowadays
True, but my word-play was bad/lame enough as it was. If I had gone for “unfunny”, it would have been, itself, unfunny
No criticism intended. I just love Chesterton and never miss an opportunity to quote or paraphrase him.
The duck in the cartoon is Daffy Duck. I was struck by how much that skit reminded me of Abbott and Costello, because of the rapid-fire word-play. However, it might just as well be called Burlesque-style. One can see similar bits in The Three Stooges and sometimes in The Marx Brothers.
I just received John McWhorter’s new book on the topic in the mail yesterday; I’m excited to read it
He is lucky Daffy is not real else he might have sued for royalties on the title
What impressess me is that those cartoon where playing in our TV on Saturday morning and they chose not to dubb them, but just translate them, despite the verbal humor involved, so we could practically see/enjoy the original.
I characteristically remember Daffy saying “You are despicable” to Buggs Bunny, on a similar themed episode, but it was not in this clip. And that’s how I learned that word. I watched the cartoon and went to find the lexicon after it ended
The same happened with “Count Duckula”. To this day I cannot read the phrase “legend has it that…” without listening it into my mind with the voice of the narrator:
This also tought me how “suffice” is pronounced too… all in all, quite an educative and fun intro hehe
We’ve had some news in this topic previously about the issues the VW corporation is facing, but this puts a different perspective to it:
This is objectively bad, considering that my car (the cheapest Suzuki you could buy in Greece), actually offers the same (and sometimes more) when it comes to crucial components as this behemoth that costs 3+ time more. I cannot believe that they expect someone to pay 60000 pounds and not get a 4x4 system on an SUV.
Also, the whole video is imho a fantastic demonstration of British polite indignation, which kind of made it funnier.
P.S.
On a funny note, my father used to own that exact shirt around 1990. Glad to see it is making a return to form… unlike Audi ahahaah
Asteroid 2024 YR4 had a very small chance of impacting Earth in 2032
Damn I hoped it was sooner
Great news! The 1st Athens Go Tournament is finally going to happen this October
If anyone would like more information and register, this is the link with all the information:

I’ll finally get to play a real life game in my lifetime.
Your first real game in a tournament? I’d be so stressed. Better practice placing stones on the board before!
And: Enjoy!
And also captures in the lids!
Great!
I guess it will be even more as one.
And I’ll probably lose all of them, but I do not mind. It is going to be fun
Do you have some clock training? (With chess?) That could be the most annoying feature
