So both games Tan won were pretty much due to his skill in saving a weak group, though I must say I never expected it to die in either game and both attacks seemed rather ambitious even from the start.

[27th Nongshim Cup] China and Korea get 2 wins each; Games to continue in November

Lee Jihyun (right) loses to Tan Xiao (left) after winning the 2 opening games

See here for the highlights.

In the first round of the 27th Nongshim Cup played in Qingdao, China, Lee Jihyun had a good start by having a perfect win against Li Qincheng and Fukuoka Kotaro. It’s not a bad performance considering that this is his first time playing in the tournament, and it has also been a while since Korea won games consecutively from the first game.

In the third game, Lee Jihyun also played well against Tan Xiao, establishing a lead into the middle game. However, Tan Xiao showed his shinogi skills and made a good shape inside black’s influence. Lee tried to go for the kill but it was an overplay and eventually he couldn’t hold it and lost the game. Tan Xiao displayed amazing shinogi skills again in the fourth game against Hsu Chiayuan and got two consecutive wins.

The round two of the tournament will be played in Busan, Korea in November this year. Kang Dongyun from Korea will be attempting to stop Tan Xiao’s streak in the fifth game.

From the senior group, Rui Naiwei had already won 3 in a row. And will be meeting Cho Hun-hyun, the past Go Emperor himself, today for the last match in the first round.

Fantastic. A king and a queen of world of go.

Sadly I don’t speak the language. Crazy game

Rui is pushing her attacking style to some extreme

From the look of it in this game, Cho Hunhyun still has an excellent whole board position judgement (which is to be expected, this is less affected by age, but only gets stronger with more experience). While Rui Naiwei has excellent fighting and reading ability, which also makes sense since she is active playing in the Chinese women A league and still beating younger players from time to time.

Cho now (move126) actually has a lead and more territory than Rui, but all small and local (right now, 5 to 6 groups already for Cho as white), while Rui has strong influence and thick.

After watching today’s game between Cho Hunhyun and Rui Naiwei I suddenly got an urge to “properly” play a few games this afternoon.

timestamp 2:03:46

While I was watching their games this morning, I can sense that Cho Hunhyun seemed to be really enjoying the game he was playing. His old “habits” constantly showing, smiling and just seemed so happy. It makes me thinking that I wish I can still enjoying my game like this when I am 70. There are limited amount of games a person can play in their life time, we should all enjoy and play every game as much as we can.

I met those two years ago. I mean not in a game, obviously. They are like saints. If the devotion for go is like 100% for a professioal playerbtheirs is about 1000%.

Nongshim Cup is the tournament with a lot of exciting games and in the end Shin Jinseo wins.

Well Shin Jinseo tends to be more careless when he faces “weaker” opponents, so if Iyama continues to play strongly he may have a chance.

Here is a review for a previous game of this cup (Park Junghwan vs Iyama Yuta), which came out today:
