AI use not allowed message

Hey all,

i would like to suggest a clearly visible message that ‘AI-use is not allowed’ when registering a non-bot account on ogs. Easy to implement in 2 min. We need to start somewhere it’s getting worse and worse.

Doesn’t that go without saying?

It should - but it does not.

OGS has rather muddied the waters by adding a feature in which an AI will take over and make your opponent win after they pass 3 times, even if they might have lost had they continued to play you themselves  .

Can we please get rid of AI interrupting a game and ending it latest complaint.

The Alan Turning tournaments might muddy the waters also

But generally maybe it could be helpful to make it slightly more visible than Play Go at online-go.com! | OGS

No Cheating or Computer Help

You can NEVER use Go programs (Leela, Zen, etc.) or neural networks to analyze current ongoing games unless specifically permitted (e.g., a computer tournament). The only type of computer assistance allowed is games databases for opening lines and joseki databases for corner patterns in correspondence Go. You cannot receive ANY outside assistance on live or blitz Go games.

It might not necessarily prevent that many people from doing it if they just have to tick some box. Introducing it only for new accounts doesn’t inform any old accounts who might suddenly decide to do it for some reason or other.

If it helps it helps though.

Did you want to write, “… does NOT inform any old accounts …”?

I believe it would be no problem to create a notification that informs everyone, right?

Maybe a stupid question, but how do you know if your opponent is using AI?

I’ve never run into anyone I am confident or even highly suspicious of them using AI.

There were some games where the opponent has a very stable win rate graph without much blunders, but I feel like that might just mean they’re good and I played too passively for them to blunder.

Fixed it thanks

Thanks to bringing it to my attention that it is in the Terms of Service!

In my opinion it should be more visible when creating the account. So can we do a short bullet point TOS - version upon account creation with a checkbox to tick and a link to the full TOS?

It’s a small psychological step to improve the situation. If it prevents 5% of the cheaters doing it it’s already a success.

We also get rid of the ‘oh i did not know’ argument.

Regarding the Alan Turing Tournament: surely there’s always meaningful exceptions to rules.

I think that’s overly optimistic, given how many people read TOS agreements. It’s like when companies sneak stuff past us in TOSs. It allows them to legally claim we agreed to it, but anyone with a brain can tell it’s not being honest on their part. I like Rossman’s moniker of TOS Roofiing

That said it sounds like a fine idea to me

  1. You take a program like KaTrain and run an analysis on the game you just played with like 2k playouts per move. Under ‘Analysis Options’ → Performance Report you get the Accuracy Rating and the ‘AI Top 5 Match %’. If it’s like 98% and you are not playing a top world class pro you can be reasonable sure. In 95% of the cases it is that easy. In the remaining 5% it is not. You also need to know what you are doing and it helps to have decent go experience to judge in not so obvious cases.

  2. I run into these people all the time. It is really bad. really. It happens so often that it gets very frustrating. When they get to dan level they have already cheated in 20 to 100 games.

  3. I am very confident i can distinguish between people playing very well and people cheating.

OGS is such a technically great server and it has matured a lot but these AI cheaters really ruin the experience.

Could I ask what’s your level?

Like @Shen0927 I think I hardly ever come across players I suspect of cheating so it’s quite a difference of perspective.

I’m 1D/2D on ogs. But the AI cheaters mostly start much lower and then rise through the ranks.
Maybe it’s because higher rank players more often review their games with AI and therefore notice it more often. I also play a lot of games - even started checking my opponents player profile before playing to reduce facing them. Often AI cheaters also stop at a certain level and loose games by timeout or resigning although they were winning because they need losses to stay at e.g. 1D. It has sad implications like not playing new players. When i play someone with a new player profile i already know before the game that there’s like a 40% chance i have to file an AI use report after the game. It’s that bad.

People who come to this platform to cheat will gladly ignore a pop-up as they will ignore the TOS. The excuse “I did not know” would never be believable to me. I think we are stuck with report and (IP) ban.

I think the vast majority of players are not cheaters, however most of the time when we play against cheaters we don’t realize it. A few weeks ago my opponent crushed me

I didn’t suspect cheating and thought I was just playing badly. But a few days after, my opponent deleted his account. Why would he do that unless he was a cheater?

Possibly. I imagine it’s also more prevalent around Dan level (like you and OP) than high sdk like me.

This is 98% true. So let us catch at least the other 2% with that message.

There’s also other reasons i started this thread:

  • You have to clearly state what you want (no AI use) before punishing people (yes it’s in the TOS but i mean visible)
  • I want to know what the community experienced regarding AI cheaters
  • I’m a believer in small steps. Let’s just get a little cheap thing going to start things
  • I’m interested to know what devs and mods think (e.g. what is the current status of automatic detection - what are the problems)

As you mentioned report and IP-based ban: Do you know if ogs has IP-based ban? It would be great but i doubt it. KGS has it.

I’m also not happy with the ‘report and ban performance’. It would be nice to get feedback when a ticket is closed and why nothing was done in some cases.

With this, I aggree. Sometimes, for me a case is obvious but the ticket is closed without action. I would wish for some feedback but I understand that moderation for a larger platform is already time-consuming without having to deal with me.

The problem exists definitiely but I do not think that much can be done about it beyond was is already done. Like you said your proposal does not hurt but I acknowledge again that somebody would have to implement it and there are more important things.

Sometimes nothing is done because moderators are overwhelmed.

Well if that really is the reason it would be much better to keep the ticket open until a mod with the right skill set has the time or to enlist more mods while working on the automation. It is not good as it is. It is frustrating people.
