Seems like there are 100s of groups.
Some seem very inactive, almost dead.
Any way to filter those out?

No automatic way. I would just look at member numbers. There are less than 150 groups with 50+ members. These are likely to be the more public options anyway.
Smaller groups may well be active but you are more likely to find them through another player, after joining one of their tournaments, forums or word-of-mouth.
