I set the opponent range to -1/+1 and handicap auto, but when I am paired with someone 1 rank stronger we still play an equal game

Maybe your opponent was 0.9 rank higher?

I think auto handicap works like this:
I donβt know what the -1 to +1 range really means though. If itβs really strict, maybe you can never get a handicap like that.
Also note that handicap 1 just means you play with no komi.
