My current username is mittens_ mittens_ and it would be a dream to lose the underscore. Unfortunately, I see that user mittens Mittens already exists, but they don’t appear to have any recent public activity.
What is the policy for requesting an “abandoned” username?
The OP has a reasonable question. mittens played one single game back in 2007, and has never played a game since. If there’s any situation where revoking username rights would be justified, it’s here. Now I’m not sure even here it should be, but at the very least it’s a reasonable question
The OP simply asked for the policy, there’s no need to get combative
I know. I just stated my opinion. Nothing personal to OP.
I strongly believe that usernames should be persistent and unique. It is not how it is implemented now.
This gives me a bit of trouble when the user changes the login and image too often. To be honest, only one specific user is causing me a problem with this (Tournament Game: 13x13 Open League #44 (129247) R:1 (NAHUE chan oh vs mikhail.trusfus)). Because he constantly joins tournaments and always disconnects from them. And every time with different avatar. Sometimes with different usernames. So the ability to change username is very annoying for me.
I think username should be used as primary user id. It is very difficult to remember numerical identifiers. It is just my opinion.
I do not suggest this to implement. Other people may have different opinions. Mine is no more correct than others. I don’t think there can be a correct one here.
Therefore, on the issue of the topic of releasing an abandoned name, I am strongly against it.
If you look in the “Name” column for the game you can see their original username appear there.
Personally, I’m not sure how much of an issue I think this is. It may have been hard to identify that they were the same user, but now that that’s happened, can’t they be reported for repeatedly disconnecting in a tournament?
It was a glitch caused never ending tournament. Since then this particular user annoy me by participation in any tournaments. I do not understand a reason to start games you never want to play. This is disrespectful.
So because of this I’m strongly against any renaming without good reason. Definitely registering account by adding underscore at the end of existing username is not a good reason to claim any rights on the original username.
I think this case may be cause for different negative consequences. I do not approve of moderator intervention unless absolutely necessary. This is exactly what OP wants. They are asking to forcefully rename another user due to lack of activity.
No, “opponent” column displays their current name. “Name” is for the name of the game. Some of the game names are:
NAHUE chan oh vs mikhail.trusfus
Nahuel.tenuki vs mikhail.trusfus
Nahuel 2014 vs mikhail.trusfus
But you can see from the opponent column, all of these games were played by someone now called Nahue chan oh
I 100% agree, but can’t you report them?
But how often does this come up? You said before there’s only one specific user annoying you. There are lots of features on this site that people will use in ways that annoy me. When using automatch, some people tend to cancel most of their games. Sometimes I match with the same person a few times in a row and they keep cancelling, so I block them. Sometimes people abuse the chat by saying rude things, or they try to throw me off my game. I just report and block them. I don’t think we should get rid of the ability to cancel a game, or do away with the ability to chat, just because there are some people who abuse these features.
You said you were against renaming period, including users changing their own login name, that “the ability to change username is very annoying”, and that you believe “usernames should be persistent and unique”. You also brought up the example of a specific user you have an issue with who has changed their own name.
You were not only against changing other users’ names, but said you were against changing names at all. Changing one’s own name is currently a feature, it’s something you brought up, and I was responding to this point.
