"Back to Board" button goes to a different place

Steps to reproduce:

  • In a finished game, navigate to some position in the middle of the game.
  • Estimate Score
  • Back to Board

Actual behaviour:

It jumps to the end of the game.

Expected behaviour:

It stays at the position in which Estimate Score was clicked.

Notes:

This is a regression, it used to work until a few weeks ago. It’s most annoying when I’m analyzing variations in a tricky position.

As a temporal workaround I suggest you to use navigation buttons under the board

They will jump you from score estimator to analysis but to the adjacent position.

Thanks for the report @kendfrey! I just tried it and see the same thing. Hope it can get fixed soon, that’s a big problem.

I traced the issue reason

But I have not certain about suggested expected behavior.

I suppose Back to Board button should return to the last move and exit analysis move. The caption of the button says this. Now it returns to the last move but doesn’t exit analysis.

To return to the position in which Estimate Score was clicked in analysis mode it is possible to click image button. It works as I expect. Stays at current move.

Ah i wonder if this is connected to “wong person to move” and “wrong colour shadowstones” when going from score estimator back on the board. (shadowstone as in, the opaque stone that appears when you hover over the board)

These are from games where it was my turn as black, but when using the SE and going back, it occasionally said “white to move” and/or made the shadowstone as white.

It’s quite bizarre to see that this was apparently intentional. A “back” button ought to return to where I was just previously, whether that’s a game in progress or a variation in analysis mode (during or after a game).

I encountered this glitch once during conditional moves planning very long time ago. What I remember after opponent move the conditional sequence ghosted on the board.

Long time ago analysis was enabled by default in automatch and AST. While you are in game you need to click “Back” button twice to return to the game to make a move. It takes extra time to make a move. So I think it is obvious by “Back” return to the game.

P. S. There was a time when I also overuse analyze mode in game.

I disagree. If I click Estimate Score from within a game, the back button should return me to the game. If I click Estimate Score from within analysis mode, the back button should return me to analysis mode. You don’t need to click twice to return to the game if you weren’t in analysis mode already (this is already working properly)

I understand your confusion. I think it is better two have to buttons in this case. But it doesn’t matter nowadays. So your suggestion is good. It may help to break a habit use analysis mode during the game. I think it is some kind of cheating despites it is not.

But but we still have to take into account the opinions of others. Let consider when during a game some player enter analysis mode, put some stones then go to score estimator. How can they get back into the game with just one click?

IMO the problem is that we have “Back to Game” in one place and “Back to Board” in another, and they do the same thing

Actually “Back to Board” returns to analysis mode if that’s where you came from. It’s not quite the same as “Back to Game”. The problem is that it returns to the wrong move within analysis mode.
