when one is behind in scoring by say over a 100points and it say its move 125 and up in a 19x 19 board game – what is the right thing to do, just resign so as not to make the other fellow waste time playing what is obviously a lost game and therefore moot to him/her to finish and get hi/her point or should one pass till they other accepts the decission – what is the better to do and most honourable to the site ???
If you wish to end the game because it has come to its conclusion (i.e. all borders are closed and there are no more reasonable moves) you would pass.
If you wish to end the game but there are still things like open borders, then you should resign. Both players passing takes you to scoring, but if there are open borders you cannot score properly, so the only thing to do is resign.
Thank you for your good, concise response- i will follow it
also what is the “red sd” under the person’s name or handle etc what does it mean???
I think it stands for “sudden death”. Whatever it stands for, it just means the person is close to timing out. If they don’t make a move soon, they will lose the game because they ran out of time.
oh thanks but they still keep playing – so i don’t know
since iam starting to use 100 points behind as my resign marking point in a 19x19 game, what should I use in a 13x 13 that generaly reflect the same cutoff point to continue
13x13 is about half as big, so 50 points would be a good enough first-order approximation imo
We were at a similar place already about half a year ago. Back then you started to show some progress for a very brief period. Right after I made the following comment:
Wow that “looking for sage advice teaching in a game how to play” thread is absolute FIRE ![]()
Apparently I’m late to the carousel and this has been spinning in circles for quite some time. I had no idea it was so explicitly obvious.
But for the life of me I just can’t understand why? So much time and effort involved in trolling.. what’s the pay off.. seems like an odd hobby to me. Somebody help me understand.
It was even hotter back then but @dokbohm deleted many of his most outrageous posts.
The monk story however is still there, which was intended to explain why some of his games did look like cheating. A must-read! ![]()
And of course there still is this remote possibility that he is fully genuine and is just suffering from some condition that makes him show all these pretty special behaviors.
thank you for your reply – so i will maybe 65 as my cutoff point and see what happens again thx for input
What I’m about to say doesn’t apply to THIS particular situation, I’m afraid, because …
behind in scoring by say over a 100points
… is QUITE a lot.
But generally about being behind, what I was once taught, was this:
When behind, complicate the game.
… because even for stronger players there is a point when it gets TOO complicated for them, and why deprive them of a fine opportunity to blunder? ![]()
The opposite of this, that is: when you‘re leading, would be the following proverb:
A rich person shouldn’t look for a fight.
Or, as a simple suggestion: When leading, play conservatively, close borders, no experiments like invasions, etc.
wow great sage advice i like it —a rich oersin shouldn’t look for a fight---- oj then using that logic then what would slow stupid broke person do ???
A slow stupid broke person should learn and apply the fundamentals..
yes i figure you say that always getting to the back to the point of learning the lessons here on this site ---- hummmmmmm-
If you keep asking the same question, don’t be surprised to get the same answer.
But to answer the thread, even if you’re behind, play the game to the end so you gain more experience at closing borders in the endgame.
I for one …
-
am not quite stupid yet but seriously, it feels as if I’ve gotten somewhat more stupid than I was a few years earlier, and …
-
am also not totally broke but I have to live off a ridiculously tiny pension.
-
Oh, and I used to be quite quick and nimble, but nothing of that anymore.
![]()
And I’m old and sick also, and I only mention that because you often said the same about yourself.
But you know, Dok, I’d offer to play you if I weren’t afraid that …
-
you’d play moves without even thinking for a second, and …
-
you’d resign too early before the game is finished.
I‘ve scratched at 3 or 4 Kyu about five years ago, and then some things happened that hit me quite badly, and in consequence, I fell back to 13 kyu over a period of about 3 years … so I know how painful it can be to be a horrible player (as compared to being a slightly less horrible player at 3k or 4k).
So … IF you‘d promise to think at least a few minutes for every move, and experiment with variations before placing your stone (you DO know how variations work on OGS, do you?), AND IF you’d promise to play the game to the end, never mind how painful, then I’d offer to play a slow correspondence game with you ![]()
And be warned, many people with whom I initially played JUST ONE correspondence game have meanwhile played dozens of games with me
Some have been playing with me for more than a decade meanwhile.
I don’t even know whether you or I would want to walk into that trap ![]()
i would love to play you but iam afraid your conditions of engagement i cannot meet - but thanks for the offer have agreat day and love your input on the forums
Refusing Trohde’s help is a mistake.
I’m likely not alone in questioning your sincerity about wanting to improve if you’re refusing the help of a mentor.
FYI I’ve been playing him continuously since I started with GO last year and his comments and explanation of variations have been a big part of my improvement journey.
