Hi, i’m a new go player and I’ve practicing against bots on OGS.
I noticed that the same bot will have a different Kyu. For exemple when I create a game, it will sometime say that bergamot is 17k. Some time 14k. But then, in game the rating will appear different as the one that was indicated in the game creation tab.
For exemple, the last game I did, it was indicated bergamot 14k, but somewhere during my live game, I noticed the bergamot was 19k.
Every day it seems like the ratings move around for the same bot name. This is making it confusing to know what bot rating I am facing.
Is it a if bug or is there something I don’t understand?
As you can see, the ranking of the bot is fluctuating according to its results which is what we could expect.
Just consider that
it plays a lot of games
the beginners range rankings may be less consistent
the OGS ranking is very responsive
The thing with ranks is that they are calculated so that players get games with a fair chance to win, they are not designed to be like a diploma or reward of your successes.
If looking at ranking troubles you, you can hide them in the general settings
The bot plays so many games, that it has multiple winning streaks and losing streaks per day. Whenever that happens the rating system thinks “oh, wow, you got a lot stronger” or “oh, wow, you got a lot weaker”.
One might think that because the rating system has so much data about the bot’s results, it can come up with an adequate rating.
Thank you for your answer! Confused is more what I was than bothered:) I was just wondering how it worked, if the bot got stronger and weaker depending on certain factors. But as I understand it, the bot stays at the same strength, it’s just the rating that moves around depending on the game it did.
