When I use the “create” button to make a new game, sometimes randomly the settings are changed. In particular the handicap settings change. This is extremely annoying, is it possible to fix?

Maybe if you provide steps to reproduce.
At least you should provide the settings you used and links to some games they weren’t applied to correct.
In case of handicap, when you play against a provisional player, the handicap is lower than you expect it to be by design.

Usually settings for new game are copied from last game created.
If this isn’t your case you could provide detailed description of what you do, possibly with screenshots.
Note that many informations are stored in cookies, so many things may interfere: different browser, different device, cookies disabled, private sessions and so on

I played this game with “automatic” handicap: https://online-go.com/game/23496333
as you can see i got someone with similar rank, I got black with no handicap.
Then I clicked create again and got this game with someone 3 stones stronger, again just black no handicap: https://online-go.com/game/23496909

these were consecutive games played in the same browser (up to date chrome on windows).
This happened to me again and I caught it right away and might be able to explain it now:
I used “Create”, set up “auto” for handi & komi, and played a game: https://online-go.com/game/26034890
I returned to the “Play” tab, and clicked on someone else’s challenge: https://online-go.com/game/26037134
I returned to the “Play” tab again and clicked “Create” and the settings had changed!
Handi is now set to “none” and Komi to custom 6.5:
The bug seems to be “Create” is using the settings from the last game, not from the last game that I created.
