i was playing with someone and (japan rules) and i had more captured stones than him. but when he and i passed and we got to selecting dead stones, he won. i don’t know if i played bad or picked the stones badly.
can somebody explain please?

Go is about who conquered bigger territory. Its not about who captured more stones.
how does that count?
think about area in geometric sense
here white has bigger area than black, therefore white is most likely to win.
Japanese rules are slightly more complicated than that, but its usually useless to think about something else during game.
