Does my rating drop if I become an OGS moderator?

I noticed that the ratings of various moderators keep dropping.

Why would becoming a moderator impact your rating?

  • Moderators have been using OGS for many years
  • There are reasons to think that the OGS rating system has become harder these last few years
  • People who have been playing go for many years generally don’t improve anymore, or only very slowly.

!!!1111!!! all Moderators are Sandbagger in conspiracy !!!11111!!! SCNR

On a serious note: I noticed that many play much correspondence. Perhaps there is a natural effect of each recruting their own. Or correspondence players having a bigger inclination to becomming a mod. But perhaps it’s easy as a moderator to slip into discussions in random games by complaining users and there is a (unconscious) tendency to avoid it. If I would be a mod I would want an alt-account for sure. And perhaps there is a difference in the rating pools of live and correspondence games.

(full moderators have received death threats and other nastiness from outraged or trollish users).

My rating would also decrease if I received death threats.

For my particular case - I was rather inactive for a long time, so my rank might be a bit off/volatile until it settles again, but I don’t think it is too inacurate.

I probably play less as a mod than I would otherwise, but other than that, I am not aware about any serious curse for us

Even if I receive death threats, that person doesn’t know where I am, after all.

I get sworn at quite often on OGS.

Unless you pay attention to conceal your identity, people may guess it and find where you live. Moderators on OGS or other platforms/forums may receive various threats, probably most of them are not serious but you never know, there are crazy people everywhere.

It is absolutely a fact that OGS moderators have received threats from time to time, from users who’s intent is clearly to actually scare and or harm us.

This is not theoretical.

The stress of dealing with trolls turns your brain to mush?

That’s true. But most people hide their identities, don’t they? You wouldn’t face an actual threat over a trivial issue on a website.

Well, I think I’d be scared too if someone threatened to hack me.

It seems to me that you aren’t getting much Go practice done because you’re busy moderating the OGS chat.

What is this

No, they don’t.

Especially in a hobby that has a real-life component to it.

A normal person would think so, and yet … it happens.

Wherever people gather, there are people like this among them. An esoteric hobby like Go is no exception.

The fact that most users here are unaware is nice - but it’s because “moderation mostly works” not because “users of a Go site are all nice”.
