Don't let "?" ranks queue into my custom games

If I set my min rank to 20k and my max rank to 9d, then why would you let a “?” play in my match?

I suggest they earn their chops in auto queue. Start them at the bottom and upon winning thier first match they get a rank of 31k

so yes, if a 9dan profession creates a new account on OGS, he has to start at rank 30k

some may say this will diminish the quality of armature games, but lets be real, any one can sandbag at anytime, so youre really not solving a big problem anyway.

with your solution it’s “one has to sandbag almost everytime” instead of “one can sandbag at anytime”

sure it will diminish the quality of the matches that 25k-20k play

but at what cost?

if you’re a 25k player and you keep getting 9dans in your game, i don’t think this a such a big problem

i could get further into but, that’s the long and short of it

At the cost of them being fed up with the game of Go and quitting.

There will always be an issue with uncertain ranks, but dividing that pain over all players is much more fair than to let the lower ranked players take all the pain.

Another reason not to do this is that it doesn’t help the ranking system give someone an accurate rank. Imagine a “9d?” new player joins OGS. Selecting 9d is not an option but lets say it is. The 9d is expected to win against a 25k, so playing that game and having the 9d win, achieves nothing to help the new 9d player get an accurate rank. It’s just a wasted game for both players.

I found this a little confusing. It discusses a number of problems, and also uses terminology, specific to Overwatch which makes it confusing for people like myself who do not play the game. I’m not sure I want to watch a full 20 minute video that is mostly about a game I don’t play and that covers topics not related to the rating system used here, e.g. selling GM accounts, or the number of “avoid as teammate” slots available to players.

It looks like you only really cover your “rung” system from about 7:30 to 11:00, is this right? I watched this part of the video and it doesn’t seem to go into that much detail about why starting everyone from the bottom is the best way to do things.

thanks for the feedback, i took the post down, but the long and short of it is…

if you start all new accounts at the bottom, this creates problems

if you let people pick where they start at in the ladder this also creates problems

it is my contention, that making 9dans pass through the lower ranks, creates a problem that pales in comparison to letting 10k’s enter the ladder with a false 1k rating
