Easy Problem from Graded Go Problems vol. 1

Hi everyone, last problem from the Graded Go Problems for Beginners vol. 1 here for me to understand and I might not consider myself a noob, but now a newbie level 2

About the problem 193, what’s the difference between giving the atari from the outside and from the inside? The solution only says that the outside move is the correct answer. These problems usually have just one solution, so what’s wrong with playing in the middle?

I think the middle is playable. You will have to follow up with it anyway to capture

The middle is fine, but it is strictly worse (although why that is the case is slightly more advanced). Don’t worry too much about solutions only posting one answer, when another order would work. If books posted every possible variation, they would be much longer than necessary.

But at least I believe the answer provided is the best one, although others would not necessarily be “wrong”. Could you elaborate on why the middle is slightly worse if it’s not too advanced? Thanks.

I believe often the answer to such stuff is Ko. If a Ko should be played somewhen, you lose less if you ataried from the outside. Thats my guess.

@Tschej is correct. If white captures the 2 stones as a result of a ko threat, and we have ataried from the inside, then we give up an extra stone (the atari’ing stone will not be able to escape). On the other hand if we atari from the outside, then the atari’ing stone will still be safe. This difference is not that large, but is enough in my mind to select just one move as the ‘correct’ one to show.

Oh ok, that makes sense, thank you.

It’s quite a general rule to start fighting, captures… from the outside. A bit like connecting, you have to start from the farest. Reason being to be less involved in case of ko threats, later exchanges, value for sente etc… or simply in case of misreading already.
